People can never make agreement on whether television programs should focus primarily on entertainment or education. Those who are inclined to the latter one might list numerous reasons to their allegation, and yet I'm determined to support the former one.
First, let us get down to fundamentals and confess that television, as well as movie, is part of the entertainment industry. The programs are produced by the company to make people relaxed and happy. If they overwhelm audiences with tremendous information in a academic and serious way, chances are that they'll lose their markets. Because frankly speaking, most people tend to watch television after a whole day of work. If alone they long for tranquility and relief, if with friends they seek for happiness and enjoyment. There is not much chance for education, for patience and brain energy have been depleted during daily work and study. That's why even Discoveries Channel has to appear in a more entertained way, otherwise those academic theory can drive you crazy.
Secondly, it always confused me when people blame TV entertainment induces the popularity of fast food culture, and has given the audience a degraded taste and empty mind, and that these phenomenons can simply be solved with no more entertainment but merely education in the programs. Funny though, they have no idea of what on earth entertainment is. Entertainment, is something that can make people happy and relaxed. Some find opera interesting, some are addicted to sport events, while some waste their times in talk shows and reality shows. What people often do is to exaggerate the harm of inferior entertainment and ignore the advantages of the superior. As far as I am concerned, the manufacturee should stop producing junks like soap opera, tv series showing nothing but vanity and luxurious taste of middle class, talk shows full of blah, which are all inferior and useless entertainment that make people idiots. They should stop fooling audiences around and provide something brisker, smarter, and more profound. At this point, I think BBC and HBO have done a great job. Carnivale provide a fantastic trip of a circus, and talking about authentic none should defeat the series Pride and Prejudice made of BBC 1995. They all give excellent paraphrases of how entertainment should be. It is the superior we need, not the inferior ones.
I do agree education should be involved into the programs, but it should never take the crown. After all, tv is invented to provide people pleasure. It should never contain too much academic items and serious atmosphere. Leave the education to books and let us enjoy the tv show! |
