It is more important for the students to understand ideas and concept than to learn facts.

In their study, it is important for the students both to understand the ideas and concepts and to leran facts. However, people can hardly get into the same point when it comes to the problem which weights much more importat.

First of all, for a primary student, it’s relatively more important to learn the facts. Primary school is a stage when the student’s brain may not have enough capacity to deal with those abstruse ideas, it is so hard for them to comprehend the advanced concepts behind the facts. So it’s better and important for them to learn the facts. Just remember as many facts as they can. And eventually, these facts will help them understand those relevant ideas and concepts one day. I’d like to take my experience as an example. When I was a primary school student, I saw the simple fact that the water always follows downstairs. However I couldn’t undertand it though being explained by my father, while I can easily say that it’s a simple example about the effect of the gravity.

On the other hand, it’s completely different when it comes to those students of high school. Now they have developed a large enough brain and it is much more important for them to understand those ideas and concepts behind the facts. Simply knowing the facts just scratches the surface of the problem, understanding the ideas and the concepts behind it is essential, as these should be useful in their future carrer. An engine enineeri for instance, if he just learn the fact that the steam can push the cap, how could he design an engine with high efficiency? In order to achieve it, he needs the ideas and concept of thermaldynamic such as energy, enthalpy and so on behind the simple fact. As these concept can explain the way how the engine works.

In general, it is really superficial to simply say whether it is more important for the students to understand the ideas and concepts than to learn facts. It varies according to the circumstances of the students, especially their age.
