life without memory is no life at all, just as an intelligence without the possibility of expressing is not really an intelligence. our memory is our coherence our reason, our feeling, even our action. without it, we are nothing --- Luis Bunuel,An Unspeakable betrayal

Is memory as central as Bunuel believes, does it merely hold us back? write an essay, support your position.

8 T! Z0 Z9 a6 P% jI agree with Bunuel’s believes that memory is important in our lives, to a great extent. The belief of holding memories in life seems fundamental to me and to many other people. It is undoubtedly a central part in our lives, for the basic fact that we find it hard to live without memory. Although there are arguments that suggest certain memories could only hold us back, I feel that memories are just like fundamental bits and pieces that make up our feelings and the existence of our lives.

Memories, be it good or bad, normal or unforgettable, are jigsaw puzzles that make our life complete. We can grab anyone from the streets and I can bet, it is hard to find or know folks that are never bothered by memories. Past memories constantly hound on our present self, affecting some of our characteristics and actions. A person’s unbringing and background shapes his memory, which can be stored in our brain in different ways. For example, a kid who grew up with a silver spoon, will surely have much more pleasant memories. His background affects the events he is going to experience and thus he will have vastly different memory as compared to a boy refugee from Africa on the other hand. From this simple example we can see that a person’s memory determines the lifestyle of this individual intelligence. Children growing up with the memory of a happy childhood will of course, lead a different life from a kid having the memroy of a haunted childhood." [6 ?: o5 z% N# N2 d

We people can of course, choose the memories to store in our brain. Just as I said memroy determines an inteligence’s lifestyle, this can surely be altered by simply choosing which memory to hold. For example, a person who choose to forget horrible memories or forgive the memorable event of a friend’s betrayal, will lead a happier and carefree lifestyle. On the other hand, we have folks who harbour all the unpleasant memories in their minds, allowing unhappy events to haunt them again and again, will find themselves stuck in the abyss of agony and pain. Thus, we can see from such examples that memory undoubtedly shapes each individual’s character and  their lifestyle.

- X2 ~& u4 }9 a2 H! gIn all, I would like to say that memories are a fundamental, central part of our lives that no one can forgo, just like Bunuel’s idea.  However, I have the point that we should choose pleasant memories to harbour and relive those unforgettable happy moments and forget chuck away those haunting ones. Sanying this further proves the point that memory indeed is our reasonk feeling and action.
