TOPIC: ISSUE11 - "All nations should help support the development of a global university designed to engage students in the process of solving the world's most persistent social problems."
WORDS: 527 DATE: 2009-1-5
提纲:
Position: It’s brilliant to establish a global university, but it’s not so easy.
1. It will be meaningful to establish a global university based on all nations of the world to generate talented students to solve the world’s most persistent social problems, because there indeed exist many defects/shortcomings in our society, like environment problem, nuclear weapon debate, the widening gap between wealthy and poor and terrorist activities; besides, it’s important for nations to strengthen cooperation with each other.
2. However, to found a global university is not that kind of easy. There are much obstruct to reach that destination. Nations participate in may spend some time to solve the political and administrative issues.
It's undeniable that all people in our world pursue such marvelous things as peace, sincerity and courage. Yet it always seems like the Utopian Kingdom that just stays in our imagination but never can we get there, because of the existence of some most persistent problems in our society. So are there any solutions to these problems? Some people suggest that all the nations should help support the development of a global university designed to generate talented students to solve the world's most persistent problems. Seems like a good idea, but will this really work? According to my observation, this will be not so easy. Those conceiving such opinion underestimate the complexity of the process of establishing a global university.
Admittedly, this global university idea is impressive and is feasible based on the theory. There indeed exist many problems in our society. Environment pollution, nuclear weapons and biochemical weapons etc. are some kind of persistent social problems and all potential threats that may lead to the destruction of the whole humanity if we don't control and confine their development and application. And plenty of them have already become a worldwide issues rather than single things of one certain country. So when these persistent defects can not be solved by one or a small portion of nations, it seems necessary to congregate strength of all nations to establish a global university to generate talented elites with compound abilities and will be familiar with all the situations of our world. When this come true, it will be fabulous to imagine that graduates carrying sacred missions shuttle between countries, solve problems, mediate dispute or devote to decreasing pollution. Gradually, the hostile countries like Pakistan and Israel go on the road to peace, air becomes cleaner, water more lucid and the poverty decreases tremendously.
However, I don't quite sure this will come true. I admit that the global university idea has no problem in itself and to some extent a brilliant try. But those who propose this may consider the process of reaching the destination a bit simple. I have to say it is the existence of the problems in our society that makes it impossible to achieve success, or even like the Utopian Kingdom which just stays in people's imagination. Take political benefit for example. Political power is always desirable and beneficial to a great extent in human history. I really doubt that every nation will consider the global university as a pure solution to the most persistent problems. Because of actual diverse purposes, it's almost sure a small portion counties will take it as some kind of tool to pursue advantage for their own, which deviates the original purpose.
In conclusion, I appreciate the courage and wisdom of those who bravely give the advise. It does have some advantages which will make us feel confident in the solution to our problems. Nevertheless, our nations have not been compatible with each other sufficiently, which makes it truly gloomy to meditate the future of the global university. As time passes by, we will abandon our prejudice among us, cooperate with each other better and consequently we can give it a try.
