ARGUMENT92 - The following is a recommendation from the human resources department at Tech force Computer Company.

"Many working parents report that problems related to their childcare arrangements are a major reason for absenteeism from their jobs. Bridge well Corporation, a tele-communications company, implemented an on-site childcare program and after one year, the company reported that unscheduled absences had declined by 25 percent. Since Tech force has had an increase in unscheduled employee absences over the past year, we should therefore implement our own on-site childcare program. The program will undoubtedly reduce our unscheduled employee absences, resulting in significantly increased productivity."

The argument is well-presented, but some facts are still questionable. Due to a report on the decline of unscheduled absences about Bridge Well Corporation, the author comments that Techforce should follow as the same program. Obviously it seems un-logical.

To begin with, the author fails to consider the difference between Bridge Corporation and Techforce, and it is too cursory to conclusion. Such alternatives might be there are less woman employees in B than T so that the program could become effective or the location of B is in the countryside that might cause trouble on carry children. It is possible that T staffs’ children are elder enough that no need to pay more attention. It appears reasonable, therefore, in B the program gets a good performance but it is less likely to occur in T.

In addition, the author assumes that childcare program that result in the decreasing of unscheduled absence at B. While there is no evidence the author provide to support for this. One year is not a long time to justify the program; the decline might be just to hole for a while. Also, in this one year, it is possible that some other reasons lead to the decline, such as linking salary to the presence, the changing of traveling condition, and a new employer who is much more rigorous than before. Furthermore, even though the childcare program improves the present condition, the author overlooks the negative effect it might take place. Among the unfair program to other employees who are unnecessary to take care of children, perhaps provoke some dissensions, or with complaining attitude that slow down the work.

Also, the assumption that the childcare program will enormously improve the quality of work is unwarranted. There is neither evidence to prove nor an inaccurate relationship between increasing production and childcare program. Upgrading output rely on whether the workers are skillful, whether the instrument is advanced, but not relates to a unconvinced program.

Overall, the decreasing of unscheduled absence does not result from childcare program just on the basis of scant evidence offered by the author. To better evaluate the reliability of the author depends on clarifying two kinds of samples and considering more possible alternatives.
