In this argument, the author claims the programs at the university he works in could improve through clarify the university objectives. This could be done by a survey, which includes questions for teachers, students and former students in order to understand their reason to work, their demands for university and their harvest from university separately. It seems to be convincing, but a careful examination would reveal how groundless it is.
First, I doubt whether the result of the survey really make sense. For faculty members their motive to teach may be to earn money as much as possible to make their lives better. But does increasing salary really help the quality of our university. For present students their study inclinations may be so various that hardly lend help to the subject decision. What should be noticed is the source of education is too limit to meet the needs of every students. For former students, they have left school so long a time that what they gained from university may be out of data, especially in this fast develop society. In these cases, we can’t draw a reasonable conclusion from this survey.
Second, the subjects the survey polled are also limit. The survey only includes faculty members, present students and former students, many other factors are excluded from the survey. For example, the demands of job markets, the strategy of education administer which would to some extent determine the object of university should all been taken into consideration.
Given the reliability of the survey, finding the objectives of the university does not necessarily indicate improving the programs at the university. Perhaps the object is so ideal that it is very hard or even impossible to put into practice. It is crucial to find effective measure and achieve this goal through hard working and overcoming difficulties. To improve the quality, there still a long way to go.
In the sum, the writer fails to support what he claims. To bolster it, the result of the survey should be proved reasonable and irrational or unpractical, even ridiculous replies must be excluded. To support it further, opinions from other aspect should not be neglected. Last but not least, the gap between object and reality should always be notice and everyone at the university should try their best to realize their goal.
