When most people think about the word “education”,they think of the scene that lots of students are listening to the same teachertalking about the same topic, and after that, they do the same homework. It isthe time to question this situation: is it the most effective way or is it themost human?
In the aspect of philosophyof education, only when education meets the individual’s needs and interests ofeach one can be truly effective –fully develop the distinct potential andtalent. Education, as Socartes knew over two thousands years ago, is notinserting the stuffing of information into a person, but rather eliciting knowledgefrom him; it is the drawing out of what is in the mind. As there are the sameleaves in the trees, there is not the same person in human society. Differentindividuals hold their different needs, different interesting and differentbackgrounds, how they will elicited by the same source or the same way? Thedistinct potential and talent calls for various source and space, not only for knowledgeor skill, but also for developing of ideas and human.
Cactus nevergrows in lakes; a born painting lover never learns painting skills in math’sclass.
However, in today’ssituation, problems of education relate to funding, teacher quality, standardized testing, equal educational opportunity, and the curriculum inrelation to the labor force needs and global competition and all of them limitthe idealized realizing of the meeting of every one’s needs. If everyindividuals needs are specifically met in details, there should be a singlesystem for every students- of course, it is not realities – or in contrary, they share several systems; but in this case, there should be some concessions,or it means average is the way to specializing? After all, it is a paradoxUtopia to design specifical education to meet individual needs and interestingof every student, especially in limited educational funding. On the other side, people live in society, which means they should meet the needs of labor forceand competitions for job hunting and social works. People needs somethingsimilar to share and to offer while they live as total different individuals.
How to balance this contradiction? Although complete liberty indesigning is not available to all individuals, more choices and autonomy shouldbe offered as long as the quality of compulsory education is guaranteed.
Individuals need to share some common partsin education for future living, and this is feasible in limited educationalfunding- that is important. It is the truly effective way of education inreality. In addition, more opportunity of all kinds of activities and differentways of testing should also be offered. Most of all, open mind to varieties in oceansof different contents and ways of study – it is the mirror of varieties ofhuman nature.
