Specifically designed education ignites the flames of student's interests, yet apart from this, it brings no good to the cultivating of all-round intellectuals. And another problem lies on the infeasibility of this claim.

I concede education designed to meet the individual needs arouses students' interests and is more likely to explore their potentiality in certain specific areas, such as sciences, inventions, music, arts, etc.. For example, Edison spent three months in school, and then was taught by his mother according to his needs and interests, and finally devoted himself to the cause of invention.

Yet, except the knowledge itself, students need to grow a common value system, especially the value of cooperation, which are more likely to be penetrated in the process of general formal education. Without tradition formal education, their knowledge lies about in fragments and never gets welded together into the stuff of a tempered and mobile mind for lacking the experience of collaborating with team members.


Another problem with this kind of education lies with the trend that we need more well-rounded intellectuals in today's world. This kind of education tends to narrow student's horizon and ken, considering it is designed to meet the individual needs and interests. They may deny the opportunity to pursue a comprehensive curriculum according to the claim. In stead, they are left, like shoppers in a giant supermarket, to wander the aisles, picking products according to their own favor, never sure that their selections will add up to a nutritious meal.


Finally, the determinate factor involves the feasibility of this claim according to limited education resources today. Students' needs and interests demand our appropriate guide, and it is  impossible for a teacher to know each student in class well enough as to design a suitable education system for him or her. And different disciplines often have same serious of basic knowledge foundation. For example, both chemistry and physics needs math as a basic foundation. And skills for utilizing computers are necessary for all engineering subjects. So the traditional formal education system in basic subjects is more likely to be effective considering it maximize utilization of limited educational resources.

In sum, I think the speaker oversimplifies the issue and ignores certain neglecting aspects of this claim may take. And the best way to maximize students' benefits is to make special programs to develop the potentiality of students while clicking on the generally standardized and systematically organized tradition education.
