In this statement, the speaker asserts that non-mainstream areas of inquiry play a vital role in society. I fundamentally agree with that for these areas such as astrology, fortune-telling and psychic and paranormal pursuits offer a lot of help when science cannot work efficiently. Throughout the history, those non-mainstream areas of inquiry played a vital role in social life. One apt illustration was in the medieval time when the ruling class controlled its people by means of religion. And such areas as astrology and fortune-telling offered great support to the rulers. On the other hand, they somehow fulfilled the spiritual life of people and became the substitution for science. Moreover, they had a great impact on art, especially some famous architecture styles such as the roman style and the Gothic. Both of them are of great value. They also became an efficient path to spread the opinion of Christian.

But nowadays, the influence of these subjects has decreased. After all, we human beings are rational animals. We tend to accept theory which is based on reliable facts. That is why we always hold a doubtful attitude toward those non-mainstream areas. And therefore, they cannot take the place of science and technology which have greatly improved our life quality. On the contrary, non-mainstream subjects have little devotion to the GDP.

The positive significance of non-mainstream areas in our society can be found in people’s spiritual life. In some way, they are more like psychology, but have a much longer history. We turn to them for help just to seek the peace of our life. Moreover, they can be an addition to science which cannot give a clear explanation to such philosophical questions as what’s the meaning of life or did god create the universe. That also explains why we stick to some old traditions such as the ablution of a new baby or we pray when people die. And I am sure that these traditions will last for a long time.

In the final analysis, the non-mainstream areas of inquiry give us a lot of support, especially mentally, though we may not aware of it. And they had a great impact on some specific styles of art and culture. However, they cannot be our major reference when facing certain problems in or work.
