In order to improve the quality of instruction at the college and university level, all faculties should be required to spend time working outside the academic world in professions relevant to the courses they teach.

Position: Working experience in relevant professions enables college and university faculty to offer practical instruction to students.
A.
Sometimes we’ll find university graduates not prepared sufficiently to meet practical demands of society, thus we need to adjust our teaching conception.

B.
The working experience in the practical world helps college and university teachers to design their courses according to the needs of the professional fields.

C.
Nevertheless, we should not educate our students for the mere pursuit of realistic benefits, emphasis should also be laid on fostering the interest and relevant methods in learning.

D.
A harmonious combination of both academic and practical goals should be achieved.

Now many of the company employers may be disturbed by a similar problem: I pay a considerable amount of salary to my employee who owns a PHD degree, and only to find that he can do nothing satisfyingly except solving some certain kinds of mathematical problems on a test paper. Thus confusion and dissatisfaction are partly, and significantly the result of a lack of acknowledgement of practical application of the academic work in the employee’s school years, which has much to do with the faculty’s not enough emphasis paid on cultivating students’ ability to apply what they have learned in practical situations. To properly tackle this problem step by step, we have to firstly require our school faculty themselves to spend time working outside the academic world in professions related to their fields.

The working experience in the practical world helps college and university teachers to design suitable courses contained with practical knowledge that will do the students good in the long run. To begin with, teachers who have chosen to work outside the academic world in professions related to their fields are more likely to find faults in currently prevailing teaching theory and methods. For example, medicine teachers may find insufficient aspects existing in the teaching of the procedure of producing a certain kind of medicine which, if not found in time, might mislead the students into producing medicines that may bring a destructible effect. Furthermore, teachers can make sense of what obstacles may be in the way of their students’ learning since working outside the academic world will contribute to a more concrete understanding of one’s study field and thus he or she can provide more instructive advice in others’ learning proceed. What’s more, teachers will also acquire the knowledge of top technology applied in their field now as well as in what way their field is related to the practical world’s development. Finally, a more comprehensive teaching method, in which there are both accurate illustration of academic knowledge and practical experience, will come into being once the teacher combine what he have learnt in and outside the university together.

Nevertheless, we should not educate our students for the mere pursuit of realistic benefits which will disobey the orientation of our liberal education. I concede that certain amount of practical knowledge is indispensible in a university student’s further learning and working, but only teaching practical knowledge like working skills will do no good to students but shape them into dumb working machines. What we have to keep in mind is that besides the necessary practical skills, teachers also have to pay much attention on cultivating students’ sense of how to make their own way of learning as well as on inspiring their enthusiasm in the subject they study. Only by doing so can students constantly learn and fulfill themselves after their graduation from university.

Take the two aspects I have discussed above into account, we may safely come to the conclusion that a successful teaching method which plays a decisive role in improving university’s level and teaching quality will come into being only when a harmonious combination of practical teaching and academic teaching is achieved.
