大多数的OT paper都是这样的思路：基于已有的constraints，不能解释什么什么data对，什么什么data不对，现在加上XYZ constraints，就能解释了，所以XYZ是natural language必要的constraints。好的paper还要加上，这些新的constraints能predict不同的typological patterns（某一个语言的具体ranking不是用来解释语言现象的，只是说明这个constraint work的方法）。

说这个思路不是circular的，主要是因为paper是用反向求导的方法，从data分析还有什么constraints是缺少的，但实际上，哪怕作者什么都不说，直接发梦梦出一些constraints，只要能predict某些之前不能的data pattern，就可以了，完全不需要说他这些constraints是怎么变出来的。

这里constraints的意义和ranking的意义很容易混淆，constraints是要被hypothesize出来的，但随之产生的ranking是不能被控制的，只要有了一个新的constraint，它就可以在hierarchy中任何一个地方出现，这些新的可能的ranking没有任何方法加以制约。所以“梦”出这个新的constraints之后，要用data来推测出该语言的ranking。这个ranking没有什么解释力度，只是说明许多种ranking中的一种在该语言中存在（当然这个过程是必要的，如果什么ranking都不work，肯定是constraints少了什么或者错了）。

我想说的是：constraint是独立的，不需要任何其他理由存在。ranking是挑选所有可能性中适合某个语言的一种，本身没有解释力度（一般认为ranking是arbitrary的）。有解释力度的是constraint set本身。这些constraints很多都有comprehension或者production的考虑在其中（markedness constraints），但也有faithfulness constraints（Ident这样的，只是保持和input的统一）。像三声变调这个，最终两种constraints都需要：变成了二声而不是其他，不光是因为三声marked（比如说low sonority，或者complex contour），也是因为二声是所有其他可能中既符合markedness也符合faithfulness的（不能和原来的三声差太远）。只是用speech perception来分析，有了markedness，没有faithfulness，在很多时候只能predict什么不好，不能成功的predict什么是相对最好的。

难道是我理解错误，我印象中OT只是个framework，它本身没有啥解释力啊，OT没办法告诉你为啥有这些constraint，为啥要这么ranking，我看这两年大家都试图从speech perception的角度来解释这两个问题，这也从另一个 ...

I am just a bachelor and my major was English literature.
I did not even think about trying until a friend of mine,working for MIT Medical School,pushed me a little bit and said "It doesn't hurt to try!"

But I have to say, you background was quite competitve (maybe not MIT competitive but still...), only thing is are you sure you want to do linguistics and why...and how much do you actually know about it?

Why do I study linguistics?
Well,I would have to say that my exposure to linguistics is extremely limited.
All I have is 5 years' English teaching experience as well as passion for language study.
I am not well-read whatsoever on linguistics.
I did take a few courses of linguistics back in college.
Anyway,my thesis was on English teaching.To be more precise,it was on the balance between fluency and accuracy in teaching speaking.
What about you guys?
Where did your passion for linguistics come from?

I regard linguistics as a road leading to a better understanding of the intelectual nature of human beings...I consider mysef as a Faustian person with raw curiosities, and linguistics provide so many interesting questions and so many possible answers...just captivating...
