【09年2月-3月GRE作文突击小组】6号作业:loveliness: Issue201
Educational issues always be intricate and complicated, especially when it comes to the purpose of education. One thing should be carefully considered: fundamental values and ability for specific jobs, which is more essential for students? As for my viewpoint, the two are not mutually exclusive, since both of them play different but vital roles in students’ distinct studying ages; but in general, they are equally important.

As a popular Chinese saying goes, once the person’s character formed, it can hardly be changed any more. That’s to say, as for the young children, rather than particularly professional knowledge, it is much more crucial to instruct them the basic but crucial value concepts and ethical standards. These values include principles of farness and equity upon which our system of law is based, as well as the values of tolerance and respect when it comes to the viewpoints of others. These value systems not only can be worked out when young students interact with their peers, but also be practiced after them growing into working adults. In the long run, by helping children develop a thoughtful, principled value system educators actually help prepare students for jobs.

After several years’ elementary education, both students’ body and mental abilities are improved well. Most of students put out a craving for professional knowledge. This stage as for middle and high school students is very vital, which bring a big challenge to educator that how to combine the two points of education together in most effective way. On the one hand, practical and useful knowledge should be introduced into students. After all, only when possessing certain useful knowledge, one can be a excel persons, who is able to bring great contributions to the society at large. On the other hand, merely learning principles, figures and technical skills can not help students determine which goals are worthwhile and whether the means of attaining those goals are morally accepted. In other words, strong values and a set of correct ideas are needed to determine how students can best put their rote knowledge to the use in the working world in the future.

As student growing up, knowledge they learn and the subjects they touch with became more and more professional and specific. Students prefer to seeking for advanced knowledge which directly help improve their personal skills, so that to be a qualifies and useful personal to the whole society. At this time, I think the emphases should be focused on the special skills that could help prepare students for jobs. After all, no matter one student have so high virtue and humility, none working ability and experiences he or she own, it is hard for he/she to bring practical merits to others, society, or the whole country. From engineers to artistic, from scientists to politicians, almost every great person is good at certain fields. Comparing to the abstract ideas and value concepts, specific knowledge for chosen jobs have more directly merits to advanced students.

Obviously, as I contend above, both the values and the specific knowledge for jobs, to some extent, are equally crucial and necessary for student’s growing. So, as far as I am concerned, our educators should not pay too much attention on the issue that which is more meaningful. Instead, they should focus more on the point that how to perfectly integrate two of the factors together, therefore, better servers for students’ developments.
