TOPIC: ARGUMENT238 - The following appeared in a memorandum from the president of Mira Vista College to the college's board of trustees.

"At nearby Green Mountain College, which has more business courses and more job counselors than does Mira Vista College, 90 percent of last year's graduating seniors had job offers from prospective employers. But at Mira Vista College last year, only 70 percent of the seniors who informed the placement office that they would be seeking employment had found full-time jobs within three months after graduation, and only half of these graduates were employed in their major field of study. To help Mira Vista's graduates find employment, we must offer more courses in business and computer technology and hire additional job counselors to help students with their resumés and interviewing skills."


The statement above is well-presented.The speaker presents some actual data to prove the issue.However ,the argument has several defects in its inherent logic.Additionally,the evidences presented by the president also have week relation with the conclusion.


First and foremost,the presendent's worry about the unemployment of Mira Vista's graduates seem to be unnecessary,at least not having been proved to be necessary according to the memorandum since the evidences are too week and inefficient to prove that the seniors can not find employment,even potentially.Although there are 70 percent of the seniors who are sure to find full-time jobs soon after graduation,chances are that the rest of the seniors who had not yet informed the placement office may be able to find jobs right after their graduation and the total percent of graduating seniors may surpass that of Green Mountain College.What's more,the fact that half of these graduates toke jobs unrelated to their fields doesn't mean that graduates were not satisfied with their job or their employment was unsteady,so this may not necessarily add to the people's worries as well.Now that all the evidences are discussed to be insufficient,the memorandum is consequently invalid.

Even if it is true that the unemployment of graduates was severe,which the president failed to verify,the advice given by the president was not only useless in solving the problem but also deviated from the principle of education and would undermine the quality of students.Admittedly,Green Mountain College offered more business courses and had more employment rate of graduates,yet there was no evidence that the society would always be short of businessmen.In such condition as the economic crisis sweeping the hole world,students major in business may find it hard to get a job in a short period after graduation.Even if the requirement of youth with business acumen is large,in such competitive society,no one can guarantee the job to be steady.What's more,courses as business and computer technology are neither suitable for every students,nor appealing to every one of them.Students have the right to choose what they are interested in instead of been forced to learn by the college.

Lastly,turning to job counsellors for interview skills is surely not a good way to help graduates to gain satisfying jobs.What  employers need are talent people with professional skills who can bring profit to their corporations instead of lingual ability and some other interview skills.Although the employment may improved to some extent in a short period,those who depends on interview skills and inadequate for the job will be dismissed sooner or later while the unemployment problem will remain unsolved. 

To sum up,the president not only missed the point of their employment situation ,but also failed to contrive a good way to enhance the employment rate of graduates and distorted the core of education,that is to prepare students with critical mind,adequate professional skills,the ability to self-study and sense of responsibility for the society instead of other tricky skills.
