ARGUMENT 14
The following appeared in a memo from the owner of Green Thumb Gardening Center, a small business serving a suburban town.
“There is evidence that consumers are becoming more and more interested in growing their own vegetables. A national survey conducted last month indicated that many consumers were dissatisfied with the quality of fresh vegetables available in supermarkets. And locally, the gardening magazine Great Gardens has sold out at the Village News stand three months in a row. Thus, we at Green Thumb Gardening Center can increase our profits by greatly expanding the variety of vegetable seeds we stock for gardeners this coming spring.”

As what is shown in that memo, the owner of Green Thumb Gardening Center(GTGC) claims that because the recently released national survey indicated the cuntomers’ dissatisfaction with the quality of fresh vegetables in supermarkers and because the gardening magazine Great Gardens has sold out at the Village News stand in these three months, it is warranted to conclude that consumers are becoming more and more interested in growing their own vegetables. What’s more, the manager expected a profitable season by expanding the vegetable seeds they stock for gardeners. The claim seems to be cogent at first glance, but there are something that the manager failed to take into consideration.

The newly conducted indication and the sold-out magazines are not the evidences to show the fact that consumers are becoming more and more interested in growing their own vegetables. Firstly, the sample and the result of that national survey
are still inspecific. How many people participated in this survey? Did they just only dissatisfy with the quality of fresh vegetables in supermarkets? Are there any other things that make the customers feel worse than the unfresh vegetables in the supermarkets? Secondly, the fact that the gardening magazine Great Gardens has sold out at the Village News stand in these three months lacks the validity to explain people’s inclination for growing their own vegetables. How many this certain magazines did the publisher provided for the stand? Maybe there is other magazines sold at the stand are not so interesting as this magazine, and maybe there is another one also sold out in these months. Thirdly, the three-month is not so long to conclude that the magazine Great Garden is the most favorable magazine in this town. Lastly, the fact that people wants to buy the Great Garden can not show that they really have the interests to have some gardening word on their backyard and it can not show that people will grow their own vegetables.

Another conclusions made by the manager of GTGC is that if they catch the opportunity to expand the variety of vegetable seeds they stock, they will increase their profits. From my point of view, the manager fails to consider the facts that whether the people in this town want to buy the seeds to do the gardening work and whether their seeds they stock have the high quality for people to seed. The profits lie on the quality of their commodities and the supply-demand relations between the goods and the customers. In addition, admitting that the national survey conducted is valid and true, it can not show the situation that people are becoming more and more interested in growing their own vegetables in the town, since everything has its special facet.

All in all, the memo from the owner of GTGC contains lots of fails of consideration. If the owner wants to promote their profits, he or she should do more investigations of the market and make it clear that whether the local people really dissatisfy with the unfresh vegetables in supermarket and just want to grow their own.
