48. "The study of history places too much emphasis on individuals. The most significant events and trends in history were made possible not by the famous few, but by groups of people whose identities have long been forgotten."
历史研究过于关注个人。历史上最有意义的事件和潮流能够成为可能不是因为几个少数的名人而是一些身份早就被淡忘的人群。
提纲:
观点:人民群众是很有作用的,但是起作用的还是少部分重要的人。
The speaker claims that the trend placing too much emphasis on individuals is not correct considering that the most significant events and trends in history were made by groups of people rather than the famous few. I concede that without the contribution of the masses, the famous few could hardly do anything. However, the role of the eminent people play in history is much more important than that of ordinary people.
Admittedly, the masses play an important role in the development of history. Without the effort of tens of thousands of ordinary soldiers' bravely fight, Allied Countries would not be able to defeat the army of Nazi in the World War II the during 1930s to 1940s, even under the brilliant leadership of Eisenhower, the Chief Commander of Allied Countries. Without the effective cooperation among ordinary workers, architects would not be able to realize their such wonderful designs as White House, Aswan Dam in Egypt, and the Great Wall in China. Without the supports from the ordinary sailors, Columbus would not be able to survive in the ocean, let alone discover the mainland of America, opening a new page in the history of America. In short, ordinary people contribute much to the development of history and the role of them could not be neglected.
However, through close scrutiny of the history of human development we may find that, providing the huge contribution of the masses, the famous few have a much more important role in both significant events and trends. For supporting example, one may look no further than the discovery of Law of Gravity, first discovered by Newton, a famous scientist of Britain. By observing the phenomenon of falling down of apples, Newton worked hard for months and finally discovered this famous law in Physics alone. Without the profound work of Newton, the development of Physics would be delayed for centuries considering the importance of the Law of Gravity in not only Physics but also Astronomy, Geology and so forth. Another example to illustrate this viewpoint is fighting against Great Depression during 1930s under the leadership of President Roosevelt. It is the composed and the insightful direction of Mr. Roosevelt that helped people of United States get rid of the terrible depression. Moreover, no one would deny that it is the wise leadership of President Washington that eventually led America to get independent. In short, the famous few's role in significant events far exceeds that of the masses.
For the significant trends in society, the famous few also contribute much more. Consider the trend of equal right of different racial groups, which Martin Luther King devoted to. Without the unremitting struggle all through his life, the equal right between different groups would not come into reality so soon. In other words, such famous people as Martin Luther King contribute more to the trends that equal right. Another example to illustrate this viewpoint is the popularity of the Windows Operation System in computer, developed by the Microsoft Company. Without question, it is attributed to the long-term hard of Bill Gates, the former CEO of Microsoft.
To sum up, without doubts, the masses play a important role in the significant events and trends in history. I concede that without their efforts, the famous few could do nothing let alone bring about significant events and direct the trends. However, through comparison of the contribution of both sides, we may find that the contributions of the famous few are much more important.
