Issue 40: “Scholars and researchers should not be concerned with whether their work makes a contribution to the larger society. It is more important that they persue their individual interests, however unusual or idiosyncratic those interests may seem.”


May be scholars or researchers never care about the increasing price of the goods, may be they never care about theirs hairstyles or fashionstyles exactlly. But they can not never concern about the consequence of their research works. And for a scholar or a researcher, his or her masterpieces all come from the aggressive interests and uncomparable hardships. Moreover, the standard of the masterpiece lies on the fact that the contribution that the great work can make to the human being. I will explain the reasons why the scholars and researchers should not only follow their interests to the work, but also make their works meet the need of the society.

Initially, the society never want a mad scholar who just mostly focuses his or her
research and don’t takes other’s interests into consideration. The society gives the scientists the resources of inventions and innotations just call for the functionally big contributions to make the world prosperous and hanornious. Take the Victor Frankenstan for instance, the monster which was created by him is actually a disaster for the monster is so weird and broke up the balance of the nature. There is no problem for a scientist or a researcher pursue the holy faith, but once his or her researches harm human beings interests, they should be resisted.

Additionally, the standard of the scientific success is largly dependent on the significant discoveries which can play an important role in making good, not on the harmful consequences that the discoveries make. During the Cold War, with its increasing threats of unparalleled destruction, the invention of the atomic bomb did not lesson the impression. Can we say that Josef Mengele is not a genius scientist? Can we say that the atomic bomb is not a science work? But it is his invention that makes him so embarrassed in the scientific field, and there is no citizen think that the invention of atomic bomb is the GREAT SUCCESS of both in natural science and social science.

Finally, It is almost impossible, to some extent, in the mordern society, for the scientist and researchers continue their researches that seems unusual or idiosyncratic. In the morality, even though they created the impossibles that result in harmfulness, they would be criticized by their descendents without considering they may be innocent for the researches. That is to say, since the scientist and researchers have to responsible for their scientific behaviors and are afraid of being condemed by the public, they could not ignore the responses of the public. And when it comes to the economic supplies, there are fewer and fewer institutions or governments want to fund the mad scientific experiments, there are fewer and fewer organizations want to shoulder the impression of being reviled by the public.

In conclusion,As what was written above, I think the scientists and researchers should not and even are not able to fulfil their dreams just follow their interests with the neglection of social obligations.
