TOPIC: ARGUMENT186 - The following is a recommendation from the director of personnel to the president of Professional Printing Company.
"In a recent telephone survey of automobile factory workers, older employees were less likely to report that having a supervisor present increases their productivity. Among workers aged 18 to 29, 27 percent said that they are more productive in the presence of their immediate supervisor, compared to 12 percent for those aged 30 or over, and only 8 percent for those aged 50 or over. Clearly, if our printing company hires mainly older employees, we will increase productivity and save money because of the reduced need for supervisors."

Before sending out offers to the older workers for the printing company, one would like to have a close examination on this specious conclusion. First, the potential difference between automobile factory and priting company might fail the implementation of the recommendation. Also, it might be the case that young workers, whose productivity might be improved with a supervisor, are still more productive than older workers without being supervised. In addition, other possibilities concerning wage and worker's physical condition should be considered to expect a rise in profit.
To begin with, what applied to automobile industry would not suffice to generate similar consequence in printing factory due to possible differences in terms of factors such as operations of machines and the requirement of workers’ concentration. In fact, it is likely to be the case that the machines operated in automobile factories involve much of the workers attention because of the necessary complex procedures such as assembling different parts of the automobile while in printing company, most of the work is finished by automation. Even if setting aside the issue of the complexity, automobile factory cannot afford a damage of one piece of production because of the high value and supervising would gain much benefit by reducing the damage of product. But printings are relatively much cheaper and do not require such intensified supervising.
Even if the same rule applies to the printing company, young worker, with better energy and morale in general, might still show higher productivity than older worker without a supervisor. As a matter of fact, young people are energetic and they usually move fast and can finish physical work like carrying books printed faster. Therefore, if this is the case, hiring older worker would have no help on improving the productivity. The determination will be whether to hire supervisors for young workers rather than whether to hire young workers.
Even if older worker indeed appeared higher productivity without supervisor and exceeds that of the young, the overall profit still rely on their body condition and the average wage of the older worker. Abundant in experience, the older worker might require a much higher wage than the younger worker, regardless whether the experience will help in the productivity. Also, older worker might have more chances to get ill and be absent from work, which further hamper the growth of the profit.
All in all, the argument is not as convincing as it stands. Before making decisions about whom to hire, other possibilities and the difference between industries should be carefully considered.
