题目：ISSUE221 - "The chief benefit of the study of history is to break down the illusion that people in one period of time are significantly different from people who lived at any other time in history."


History are important as it describes what has happened in the past. The joys, the sorrows, the person, the place, the reason, and the course, all of which depicts a vivid picture as we have ever been there before. In history, there are great changes from now and then, and one destines after another, the place belongs to different countries in hundreds of years' time, that the modern people often think there are great gaps between past and present, and they even think the main purpose of history is distinguish the past from the present.

We are told that our basic human nature consisting of desires, motives, fear, and etc. have remained constant over recorded time. Through this realization, we can benefit as a society in dealing more effectively with our enduring social problems. For example, history provides a terrain for moral contemplation. Studying the stories of individuals and situations in the past allow a student of history to test his or her own moral sense, to hone it against some of the real complexities individuals have faced in difficult settings. People who have weathered adversity not just in some work of fiction, but in real, historical circumstances can provide inspiration. "History teaching by example" is one phrase that describes this use of a study of the past--a study not only of certifiable heroes, the great men and women of history who successfully worked through moral dilemmas, but also of more ordinary people who provide lessons in courage, diligence, or constructive protest.

It is equally beneficial to understand and appreciate significant differences between peoples of different time periods--in terms of cultural morals, customs, values, and ideas. Every country has its unique glory time. For the English, the Queen Victoria’s time is the golden time, the Great Britain became the empire of "the sun never sets". In this period, there are distinctive verifications in the architectures of England, which have a glorious appealing. Also, the cloth of this time is the most luxurious in history, that some Englishmen still wear it in order to show their noble temperament. For the Chinese, the Great Wall is world famous, that the propaganda of China often take it as the background.

However, there are other equally important benefits of study history. Leaning from the history can prevent human beings from making the same mistakes again. The Germanys, who suffered greatly from the two world wars, always commemorate for the people who were killed in the memorial day of world wars, thus make the Germanys never takes war again, and focus more on their perspectives more than ever. For the countries that were invade in the war, it is more urgent for them to remember the history, to strike hard to make the development.

In conclusion, the purpose of the history is mainly linking past and present, and makes them as a whole. As the famous historian Simaguang once said, "If one thing happens in the past, in certain situation, it will happen again". Thus, only through carefully study the history, can we understand the mechanics of the president better.
