I partly agree with the author that some of the scientific development is to reassure and some of the artic works is a way to upset. However, the author's assertion is too narrow to cover the whole function of the science and the art. In my mind, the science and the art can both to reassure as well as to upset.

It is true that the science can solve many immediate problems in people's life. It not only improved the way people live, but also make the people feel more security and safe. The typical example is the significant role science has played in the development of the field of medicine. The newly developed scientific technic meassure allow the doctors to examine people more accurate which has dramatically declined the rate of those injective disease to spread. In this way, it effectively prevent the public from being in panic. Therefore, the science is considered as a way that can truly reassure people and contribute to the society's harmony.

However, sometimes science can bring ideas that beyond the contempraries' understanding and even opposite to the general values of the society. The gene program, as an example, which is supposed to creat a human or human's organization with merely a few cells, has brought the entire society in to a huge debate over the moral problems. The public are totally confused whether the natural birth should be replaced by the experiment in the lab. Thus, the science challenges people's mind and has gone too far to be accepted.

When it comes to the field of art, on one hand, some of the artic wroks are regarded to upset the reality and creat something out of the public's imaginations. Exampled by the famous painter Edvar Monk, whose work "scream" are regarded one of the best masterpieces in the world. When the painting was first published, peopel can only found a torturd man in the picture and thought it was uncomfortable at the first sight. Yet, till later the public saw the strong and universal emotion which is shared and expirenced by all conveied in the painting and realise the value. Admittedly, the "scary" first impression of the "scream" is a vivid illustration of that the art sometimes upset the general recognizations.

On the other hand, the art is also an important way for people to get comforted and pacecated. Art, after all, is a way for the artists to release their emotions and express their attitude towards different things. A great artic works can strike the audiences' hearts and creat a chord in their inneral world. In another word, the field of art is a place in which people can find thier companies and therefore stop feeling lonely.

In sum, the fields of art and science can do far more contributions than the author has mentioned. Not untill the various function of the art and the science have been discovered, the world's materal and spirital development can actually be fulfilled.
