147"Tradition and modernization are incompatible. One must choose between them."

As for the issue that whether can tradition go along well with modernization? And must we choose one between them? I fundamentally share my argument that under some circumstances, it is indeed that tradition and modernization are incompatible, but if we coordinate the relationship between tradition and modernization, it is impossible for us to choose them at the same time.
Admittedly, in some cases tradition is often in conflict with modernization for sometimes the requisition of the built of modernization is the destruction of tradition. Consider, for example, the women movements, which in order to fight for more right of women in society, while when it comes to the notion of tradition about women, we often remind of an image of housewife, providing that feminist did not undermine and overthrow the traditional notion, how can the freedom and equality of women can be attained. Moving on to another more persuasive example-the revolution of society, when faced with the reformation, such as changing from feud to capital system, the striking feature of society reformation is that tradition is completely overturned for the simple reason that it is of impossibility that the profit between tradition and modernization can be pacified. Simply put, whatever else may be said, most people have to admit that in some specific cases we are not able to assuage the confliction between tradition and modernization.
However, that is not to say the relationship of tradition and modernization is always enemy if our government and populace could address the problem correctly and moderately. Here is a case in point to illustrate my position. After the Meiji reformation of Japan, which was leaded by the Meiji emperor, we are surprising to find out that though the west customs has become the main cloths when Japanese are in formal occasion, at traditional festivals they are always changing into their own cloths-Kimono; Though the sports from the west such as football, baseball and so on are popular in society of Japan, their traditional sport-sumo is considered the treasure of their country; Though Japanese like drinking coffee, each individual in Japan is very familiar with sado. From the fact of Japan, it is easy for us to conclude that tradition and modernization, in fact, are compatible only when we could balance the their relationship.
On balance, it is presumptuous to judge that one must choose between tradition and modernization because sometimes as long as we balance the relationship of them, both can still go along with each other. For instance, someone strongly support the suggestion of demolition the ancient architecture for the very old building are dangerous for citizens or cumber the development and building of modern shyscrapers. As far as I am concerned, the problem can also be solved without dismantling anything. Regard of dangerous ancient building, our architectures have been of capable to reinforce the structure of that buildings and to the question of impeding the development of cities, the ancient architecture can be relocated which has been carried out successfully many time. In a word, when faced with the confliction of tradition and modernization, we should take all kinds of aspects into accounts and make the final decision.
To sum up, due to the complexity of the issue, in my point of view, it is arbitrary to say we must choose one of them because of the confliction between tradition and modernization. Actually, effective and pragmatic approaches are proved to be found as long as we do not make too much emphasis on one of the two choices. |
