50. "In order to improve the quality of instruction at the college and university level, all faculty should be required to spend time working outside the academic world in professions relevant to the courses they teach."
During recent years, no matter the students but also the society pay much more attention to the quality of education. Frequently, they concentrate on the requirements of educators who exert a profound and lasting influence on the students. The author is right that the outside working experience of faculty, who teach in the college or university, can improve the quality of instruction. Nevertheless, not all faculty require the extra experience.
We must admit the undeniable fact that there is an interaction between practice and theory. It is viable that the faculty can discover the skills which can be used to put the theories into practice. At that point the faculty can optimize their didactical precis, which may enhance students' interests of learning, expand the ken of them, bring them fresh insights and a infectious exhilaration about their subject, and train them for the intending profession. Students, whose specialties are applied ones, such as iatrology, public relations, politics, and journalism, will profit from it.
Besides, we should preclude the faculty, who may ignore the teaching quality in college or university, from immersing themselves in working outside and earning money. The advice is that the college and university should check on the outside job of faculty so that the latter will pay more focus on the education. For example, the college and university can set up a department to arrange positions available for the faculty to work on, which can save the faculty's time as well.
On the other hands, we should not overlook that there are many other specialized subjects which are investigative rather than practical. For example, the students of physics or chemistry need nothing but involving in scientific research. Under the circumstances the faculty should not be compelled to working outside the academic world. What's more, it is highly possible that there are no appropriate professions related to these academic fields. Instead, the faculty should devote their attention to instruct the students in strengthening their abilities of scientific research.
In sum, with the aim of enhancing the quality of education at the college and university level, the educational institution should send the faculty, who teach applied subjects, to working at some relevant professions, while giving much more supports to the scientific research of the rest. |
