There are three new postdoc positions at UCSD:

1. Postdoctoral position in Molecular Cardiology in the Department of Medici
ne

The laboratory’s research interests are on understanding the molecular basi
s of heart disease by utilizing genetically engineered mouse models, state-o
f-the-art miniaturized physiological technology and a range of molecular and
cell biological techniques. We are also in the midst of designing and testi
ng strategies for rescuing cardiac disease using gene therapy approaches.

Minimum qualifications are PhD and/or MD with strong expertise in molecular
and cell biology, cardiac physiology and/or mouse genetics. Prospective cand
idates should be highly motivated individuals with excellent communication/
interpersonal skills, and have the ability to work independently. Candidates
with first-author publications will be given priority.

The successful applicant will gain experience in (i) implementing a multi-di
sciplinary approach towards the study of cardiovascular disease, (ii) develo
ping and implementing cutting edge techniques in molecular biology, cellular
biology, and physiology as well as (iii) communicating their work.

Competitive salary will be based on qualifications and appointment will be f
or 1 year with possibility of renewal on a yearly basis.

Candidates are encouraged to send a (i) statement of research interests, (ii
) curriculum vitae, including publication list, and (iii) names and e-mail a
ddresses of three referees to: Dr. Farah Sheikh by e-mail fasheikh@ucsd.edu.

2. Postdoctoral position in biomedical research

Seeking energetic postdoctoral fellows to participate in cutting edge biomed
ical research at the University of California, San Diego.

A fully funded postdoctoral position is available at the University of Calif
ornia, San Diego to study cardiovascular development in the zebrafish.  Rece
nt studies support the existence of a common progenitor for the cardiac and
endothelial cell lineages, but the underlying developmental cues and transcr
iptional networks responsible for specification of these cell fates remain u
nclear.  Our laboratory uses cellular, molecular, genetic, and transgenic ap
proaches to study the specification, patterning, and differentiation of thes
e cardiovascular progenitor cells that give rise to the heart and the vascul
ar system.  We are most interested in translating these findings for therapi
es and early diagnosis of human cardiovascular diseases, including coronary
artery disease, stroke, heart failure and cardiac arrhythmias.  Some of our
current areas of research interest include: studying the unique capacity of
the zebrafish heart to regenerate after injury with the eventual goal of lea
rning to reprogram human ES/iPS cells to cardiac stem/progenitor cells; unde
rstanding the cellular and molecular developmental mechanisms that establish
the cardiac conduction system, and how these findings apply to human cardia
c arrhythmias; studying how endothelial cells emerge during development from
pluripotent progenitors to become blood vessels; understanding how these ve
ssels are specified and differentiate as arteries, veins, and/or lymphatic’
s in order to promote vasculogenesis/angiogenesis for therapeutic purposes;
and isolating novel cardiovascular-specific mutants and studying the molecul
ar basis for their defects.

Recent papers from the lab include: Cell. 2008 Dec 12;135(6); PLoS Biol. 200
8 May 13;6(5):e109; Genes Dev. 2008 Mar 15;22(6); PNAS 2007 Jul 3;104(27); D
ev Biol. 2007 Jul 1;307(1).

The laboratory provides excellent support for career transition into disease
-oriented animal research. Excellent written and verbal English communicatio
n skills are required. Experience with genetics, developmental biology, and
animal models is preferred.  Outstanding and highly motivated candidates wit
h a Ph.D. or M.D. are eligible for T32 training grants (U.S. citizen or perm
anent resident).  Please submit your CV, a cover letter describing previous
research accomplishments/goals/interests and three references with a subject
title “postdoc application” to Neil Chi, M.D.Ph.D., nchi@ucsd.edu

3. Postdoctoral Researcher in San Diego Supercomputer Center

Disciplinary Specialty of Research:

Computational Molecular Biology/Chemistry, High Performance Computing

Description:

A postdoctoral position in computational molecular biology is available with
in the group of Ross Walker at the San Diego Supercomputer Center. This will
involve close collaboration with UCSD and Lawrence Livermore National Labor
atory to carry out research in the field of Molecular Dynamics Simulations.

The research focus of the group is advanced Molecular Dynamics (MD) simulati
ons. It includes the development of efficient algorithms for accurate and pa
rallel computation of Quantum Mechanical and hybrid Quantum/Molecular Mechan
ical (QM/MM) MD simulations; improved sampling techniques for classical and
QM/MM MD simulations; the development of novel approaches for analysis of la
rge scale and long time length MD simulation trajectories; approaches to par
allel post-processing and on the fly MD analysis as well as the use of MD si
mulation techniques for studying protein reactivity including elucidation of
the activation pathways of adenovirus proteases and studies of cellulose de
grading enzymes for use in bio-fuel production.

The successful candidate will interact with the developers of the AMBER soft
ware package. The incumbent will have access to SDSC and LLNL supercomputer
resources including some of the world's most powerful machines. Occasional t
ravel may be required including visits to the LLNL site approximately once e
very 3 to 4 months.

Location:

Nestled along the Pacific Ocean on 1,200 acres of coastal woodland, just ste
ps from the beach and minutes from beautiful downtown La Jolla, UC San Diego
(http://www.ucsd.edu/) is a preeminent university in the country providing
an excellent environment for research in computational biology, computer sci
ence, biochemistry, bioengineering, medicine, as well as interdisciplinary r
esearch. The successful candidate will reside in the new building of San Die
go Supercomputer Center (http://www.sdsc.edu/) on the main campus of UCSD.
