其实看argu很久了,就是今天才动笔第一次写,望指点~~~
TOPIC: ARGUMENT 169 - The following appeared in a letter from a department chairperson to the president of Pierce University.

"Some studies conducted by Bronston College, which is also located in a small town, reveal that both male and female professors are happier living in small towns when their spouses are also employed in the same geographic area. Therefore, in the interest of attracting the most gifted teachers and researchers to our faculty and improving the morale of our entire staff, we at Pierce University should offer employment to the spouse of each new faculty member we hire. Although we cannot expect all offers to be accepted or to be viewed as an ideal job offer, the money invested in this effort will clearly be well spent because, if their spouses have a chance of employment, new professors will be more likely to accept our offers."

In the argument, the author thought that it worth the effort to invest money on the employment of the spouses of excellent professors, because according to a research done by Bronston College, a professor is happier living in small towns when their spouses are also employed in the same geographic area. It seems reasonable at first glance, while some critical flaws appear after careful examination on it.

First, although Bronston College (BC) is also located in a small town as Pierce University(PC), we are not sure the above two are similar in many other fields.
May be it is the clean air, the well-equipped facilities, the friendly inhabitants or the high salary that attract most of the professors to accept the job offered by BC, while such characters PC does not possess.

Even if BC and PC are the same in many aspects, the argument does not show that the studies conducted by BC is scientific enough. Because it does not indicate that BC did the research among professor whose amount was large enough. It is strongly possible that BC just did it among those professors working for BC, whose reply is not so worthy of believing.

Let us take one more step afterwards, assuming that the study is well conducted and BC and PC are similar. Will it make profits if PC take effort to offer jobs to the spouses of the professor? Maybe the spouses are not capable of such working, it will only diminish the quality and honor of PC. For instance, to offer a job for cooking to and handicapped, or to offer a teaching position for a illiterate person and so on. Such acts can expect nothing but complain from the students and diminish in quality.

Last but not least, is it the most effective way to do this? To raise the reputation of PC, we can surly achieve the goal through many other ways which are as easy as the one offered in the argument: to raise the salaries of the faculty so as to keep the morale high, to invent a encourage system to make the students eager to study. There are plenty of other ways to reach the goal.

In sum, it is not reasonable for PC to accept the way that the department the chairperson raised, both technically and economically.
