TOPIC: ARGUMENT162 - A recent study shows that people living on the continent of North America suffer 9 times more chronic fatigue and 31 times more chronic depression than do people living on the continent of Asia. Interestingly, Asians, on average, eat 20 grams of soy per day, whereas North Americans eat virtually none. It turns out that soy contains phytochemicals called isoflavones, which have been found to possess disease-preventing properties. Thus, North Americans should consider eating soy on a regular basis as a way of preventing fatigue and depression.

In the argument the author recommends that North Americans should consider eating soy as a way of preventing fatigue and depression. To support the recommendation, the author makes a comparison between North America and Asia. The argument cite the data of chronic depression and chronic fatigue as evidence and also cite the facts that Asians eat much soy per day, while North Americans eat none and the author shows that soy contains a kind of phytochemicals called isoflavones. Close scrutiny of each of these facts, however, reveals that none of them lend credible support to the recommendation.

For one thing, the survey results as reported by the arguer are too vague to support any firm conclusion. It is entirely possible that these respondents in North America are all the people who have much work or family pressure which lead to them are easy to get chronic fatigue and chronic depression. Whereas, may be the respondents in Asia are women or children, who are the low possibility to get those diseases. Thus, this have no relationship with soy and the author can't conclude any recommendation just rely on the incomplete survey.

For another thing, the author fails to provide any information to support that the phytochemicals which called isoflavones have effect on chronic fatigue and chronic depression. It is possible that this phytochemicals can help cure other illness such as cold but can't play an important role in
curing chronic fatigue and chronic depression. Or it is even possible that isoflavones will have bad influence on the chronic fatigue and chronic depression. Having soy or not is just a dietary habit of different countries it is no evidence to support the recommendation of the author show above.

Finally, even if the phytochemicals could help prevent fatigue and depression in Asia, it is unfair to apply the experience to North America simply. As we all know, the physical condition of people
in North America are very different from the persons in Asia, soy could help prevent fatigue and depression in Asia not prove that it will have the same effect in North America.

To sum up, the recommendation lacks credibility because the evidence cited in the analysis does not lend strong support to the arguer maintains. To strengthen the argument, the arguer would have to provide more evidence concerning the respondents of the survey, and also should provide the information about the isolavones whether have benefit on preventing fatigue and depression. Besides, I would also need to know the condition of the two areas.

General OK, but you should develop your analysis on the alternatives causes, merely list one sentence of alternative causes is not enough.
