TOPIC: ISSUE50 - "In order to improve the quality of instruction at the college and university level, all faculty should be required to spend time working outside the academic world in professions relevant to the courses they teach."

The author claims that all faculty in the universities and colleges should allocate some time to be occupied in the careers correlated to their academics in order to improve the quality of education. I concede that it is necessary for the instructors to experience the relevant professions. However, it is not the same case in general.

In most realms, the instructor's experience in related professions will benefit both the instructor himself and the students being educated. From the faculties' standpoint, occupation in relevant vocation will favor them in fixing and updating the contents of the textbooks, which may already be out-of-date. Our society is developing at an incredible speed and knowledge is replaced by new discoveries every seconds. The famous book 'The wealth of the nations', to which a lot of economic professors referred, has always been a classic. Its long-time popularity owes much to the professors' revise as time elapses and economic situation changes. Without such amends, it is unlikely that this book is efficient to convince the students of the economic theories, since it may be contradictory to the recent condition. Furthermore, the professors may improve the design of the curriculum so that it may better cater to the current demands. History is replete with such examples. To illustrate this point, we need to look no further than the biology area. Stem cell biology has been a new and boosting area of cell biology, whose current discoveries are well applied to clinical therapy and calls for much more effort to research further. Suppose that a dean of biology department has been involved in the practice of stem cell discoveries, he/she may decide to give additional lectures covering this promising blank area, which may attract a number of students and thus meeting the demands of such researchers.

From the students' standpoint, the courses may be more attractive and exciting thanks to the instructor’s fresh insights and deep understanding of the lately issues. When the knowledge is connected with its practical use, the interpretation of the theory can be more understandable for the students. When they see that the knowledge are more than just blank theories but can be taken good advantage of to solve the present problems or provide better solution to improvement, the morale of study will be considerably inspired. What is more, the students, especially who are inclined to be engaged in related profession, may develop a better understanding of the potential job, which will favor the students in making the right choice of future career. Otherwise, the graduates can be disappointed when confronted with the differences between the real vocation scopes and expected one.

Admitted that working outside the academic could help improve the efficiency of education, we should not attach extensively significance to it. In some other fields, especially the pure theoretical fields, there is no need for the faculty to spend time working outside. It can be so ridiculous to require a mathematician spending some time working for an accounting firm so that he could see how exactly math theories are applied to practice. Moreover, allocating time for the practical experience can be an severe interruption of the smooth procedure in pursuing further academic achievement, or fail to make full preparations for the lectures, which is definitely to the contrary of our will.

In general, without working outside the academic area, there might be fewer and inefficient improvements in instructing the university or college students. However, if the scope of this requirement is unfairly extended, contradict result will lead us far from the original will.

TOPIC: ARGUMENT203 - The following appeared in a newspaper feature story.

"At the small, nonprofit hospital in the town of Saluda, the average length of a patient's stay is two days; at the large, for-profit hospital in the nearby city of Megaville, the average patient stay is six days. Also, the cure rate among patients in the Saluda hospital is about twice that of the Megaville hospital. The Saluda hospital has more employees per patient than the hospital in Megaville, and there are few complaints about service at the local hospital. Such data indicate that treatment in smaller, nonprofit hospitals is more economical and of better quality than treatment in larger, for-profit hospitals."

In this argument, the author draws the conclusion that treatment in smaller, nonprofit clinics is more economical and better than that in larger, for-profit hospitals. However, after a careful examination of the inferring procedure, the conclusion is not that convincing.

In the first place, I would call the author's attempt, to compare the hospitals in Saluda (S) with those in Megaville (M), into question, owing to the inherent differences between these two overlooked by the author. It is highly possible that the citizens in S concerns more about exercise and lifestyle and thus are much generally healthier than those of M, which will result in the smaller number of patients and serious illnesses. Without more convincing controlled experiments, the author cannot come to the conclusion whatsoever.

Secondly, the author, who fails to take a multitude of other factors into consideration, focuses too much on attributing the shorter average length of stay in hospital and the higher cure rate of the small, nonprofit hospital to the better quality of the former than the latter. Another scenario can offer an alternative account for the result. It is highly possible that serious patients are inclined to go to the larger hospital so that the larger hospital patients are harder to cure than the smaller ones.

Thirdly, observing the fact that there are more employees per patient and few complaints in the smaller hospitals, the author unfairly establish a relationship between these facts and quality of medical treatment. On one hand, the number of employees per patient does not necessarily indicate the efficiency of the hospital. Perhaps the patients are much fewer in the smaller hospital so the rate can be comparatively larger. Or perhaps the employees are more nurses and cleaners rather than the doctors, which will contribute less to the treatment. Even if the employees are mostly doctors, the author still has to rule out the possibility that the professional level of the nonprofit hospital and for-profit hospital are the same. On the other hand, the author assumes that the patients in small hospital will either complain or satisfy with the treatment, which is not persuasive. The two alternatives are not mutually exclusive, since there are some patients who are not satisfied but did not complain. Furthermore, the author does not provide the number of complaints in larger hospital. So that the number of complaints cannot be considered as an advantage of the small hospital

Last but not the least, admitted that the quality is better in small, nonprofit hospital in S, the author still cannot draw the conclusion, in that he fails to consider the specificity of the examples. The sample size is far from sufficient to substantiate the author’s statement. To bolster the statement, the author needs to provide more data on both small and large hospitals.

In general, the author poses an opinion that small, nonprofit hospitals are more economic and better than the larger and for-profit hospitals. To strengthen the statement, more investigations and further analyses are required. From my point of view, we should express more concern about the patient condition and research more hospitals, which will make the statement more persuasive and practical.
