TOPIC: ARGUMENT233 - The following appeared in a memo from the vice president of a company that builds shopping malls throughout the country. "The surface of a section of Route 101, paved two years ago by McAdam Road Builders, is now badly cracked and marred by dangerous potholes. In another part of the state, a section of Route 66, paved by Appian Roadways more than four years ago, is still in good condition. Appian Roadways has recently purchased state-of-the-art paving machinery, and it has hired a new quality-control manager. Because of its superior work and commitment to quality, we should contract with Appian Roadways rather than McAdam Road Builders to construct the access roads for all our new shopping malls." WORDS: 378 TIME: 00:27:52 DATE: 2009-3-5 22:59:22 The argument above argue that they should contract with Appian Roadways to construct the access reads for all our new shopping malls due to the different situations of two roads that were separately paved by two companies. In order to support the suggestion stronger, the author mention that Appian Roadways has recently purchased state-of-the-art paving machinery, and hired a new quality-control manager. Though the argument seems to be reasonable, it actually suffers from several fallacies such as false analogy, hasty generalization and so forth. First of all, the author exemplify another section of Route to illustrate his position, however, it is entirely of possibility that the other factors result in difference of the two road. First, perhaps there are more heavy trucks run on the section of Route 101 which lead to the damage of the road while no heavy trucks run on the section of Route 66. Secondly, the author also fails to take the factor of natural conditions into account. It is possible that the climate in the section of Route 101 is more serious than that in the section of Route 101. We all share a belief that serious climate has a negative effect on the maintenance of road. In addition, it is true that Appian Roadways has recently purchased machinery, but the argument fails to consider the possibility that these machineries are not bond to be used in the process of paving the access roads for new shopping malls. What is more, what is possible is that the project of paving access roads for new shopping malls does not need so many machineries. Additionally, hiring a new quality-control manager cannot indicate that the quality of road will improved or be better than the McADAM Road Builders. It is reasonable and understandable that the new quality-control manager is lack of experience which may not be helpful in the improvement of the quality of roads. To sum up, the argument, though it is seemingly convincing, suffers several fallacies which undermine the persuasiveness of the argument. In order to enhance the reliability of the argument, the author should provide more evidence to show that there are not other factors which influence the maintain of the road. What is more, more details should be provided about the Appian Roadways. |
