In the scientific field, the experiment and accurate data are very important for substantiating a theory, referring to whether the theory can be accepted by the public. However, in order to make a theory, one can collect the necessary data first and then theorize; also one can make a conjecture, first and latter use sufficient data or deduce to prove it. From this sense, I hold contention with the speaker that it always be a grave mistake to theorize before one has enough data.
Admittedly, without sufficient data and evidence, any theory based on imagination amount to nothing but the theorist's hope and desire. If people theorize before any data has made, they tend to distort the extent to which data support to. One telling historical example involves the theory of the Center of Universe. We ego-driven human, of course, prefer the whole universe revolving around us. Therefore, the early theory considers the earth being the center of the universe without any specific data and evidence, and any subsequent observation that contradicts it was ignored. So only based on actually data, the theory can be persuasive.
However, not all of the theories can only be made if all the data have been collected. In fact, using the logical thinking and proper deduction, one can theorize accurately before one has sufficient data, such as the edifice of mathematics. Also, from the experience in the past experimentation and critical thinking, the conjectures and hypothesis one made also have significant merits. It does not mean that the theory do not need data any more in fact, further experiment and evaluation of existing data will eventually prove or disprove the hypothesis.
In addition, we cannot overlook the fact that sometimes the particular physical experiments are impossible to be easily conducted by the modern people. However, the limitation of human's abilities cannot impede the progressing of science. The famous scientist is able to use the though experiments to theorize. One example aptly proves my observation. Einstein, one of the greatest scientist in the world, made the theory of Special Relativity just based on the though experiment of chasing a beam of light. This theory was never carried out even still now, but let to a successful theory that was proven by other empirical means. Therefore, lacking of actually data does not mean that any theory made before is wrong.
At the same time, another fact the author ignores is that continually getting data without theorizing is also dangerous and mistaking. To some extent, to postpone theorizing until sufficient data is made just might be postpone the theory forever. Nowadays, our human are facing with a wide amount of pressing social problems, including the resource depletion, environmental pollution, species extinction and so on. Such many problem need theories to solve today, if we just collect the data without any actually action, one day the earth will never be adapted for human living. Moreover, some experts and scientists already tried to find a way realizing the migration of human to other planets. If everyone holds the same opinion as the speaker that before one has data any theory is a grave mistake, then if one day the migration is necessary, we will regret that we haven't made any effort before.
All in all, since the data is the best way or even the only way proving the theory's veracity, theory should be made based on the data and experiments. However, it does not mean that we cannot theorize before sufficient data collecting, in fact, we should have the onfidence that people are able to make right theory even little data have been get
