Under the condition of economic crisis presently, there comes to furious discussion about how should the government spends its money. Some experts claim that, considering the improvement of aesthetic standard, the art should be favored by the budget. On the other hand, sports fans argue that it is the importance of nation's honor that mattered. So the sports, or the athletes of the Olympic Games will get some priority in this problem. As far as I concerned, if we take the general benefit of the whole country and vanity that a sport competition may bring, arts are more justifiably winning this debate over athletes.


I sometimes do not quite understand the claim that sports will bring friendship between the nations. Even if one do not know some specific examples, the for instance, that sports sometimes led to hatred rather than good will, one can get this from common sense. The desire for winning is the instinct of human beings, so deeply rooted in our heart which could hardly been eliminated. Imagine that we limit the competition at the school's level. As long as the matter of honor involved, as long as you feel that you or your side will dishonor if you lose, you will, to be honest, put everything related to politeness behind and running like a beast in order to beat your counterpart. When we consider the games between nations, like Olympic Games or World Cup, it is something like a mimic war. I seriously doubt such kind of activity has any meaning for the goodness of humanity. We human beings, as a civilized creature, need to feel shame for the idea that jumping or kicking a ball will stand for the honor of states.


However, the investment of art is totally the other way around. The spending on athletes is not spending on sports, thus the strength and health of vulgar will not be changed. Rather than spending the money on few people, the increment of artwork will benefit every family, from ordinary people to the president, or, usually, the artist himself. Good arts bring people with peace and quietness, letting them edify themselves. Anyone who sees the Monaliza can feel the nature of beauty and anyone who listens to sonnet of Mozart will be touched.

Moreover, when we take the fairness into account, the answer is obviously as well. Sportsmen, especially some famous ones, have got quite a lot of patronage from commercial activities. True arts, which are born with loneliness, can hardly be accepted immediately. Without the support of government, artists might die before their glorious talent shining to everybody.

It is true that spending on athletes has some positive effect, at any rate for short period. Some "heroes" on the field set models to young people to work harder and challenge themselves. But our answers to the question above should be firm and clear: if we need to choose one thing that the budget needs to focus on, arts is our preference.
