The speaker asserts that it is necessary for universities to require students to take various of courses outside the student's field of study in order to be truly educated. As far as I am concerned, I agree with the assertion fundamentally, in the meantime, students also should balance the study of compulsory courses and minor subjects.
Firstly and fundamentally, learning a variety of courses will help students develop a complete knowledge structure. If a person want to be a successful man in the society, the knowledge just from his or her major is not sufficient at all. He or she should learn lots of things because those things are really important for their future success, which include science, art, philosophy, psychology, sociology and so forth. Lacking any aspects, the knowledge system of a student is uncompleted.
As we all known, a lot of famous and great
men in history had broad vision in many fields, Da Vinci, not only a famous painter, but also good at science, medicine, physic, and even invented aircraft on his own. Simply put, different kinds of knowledge enrich a student and enhance his or her competitive in future.
Secondly, contacting with other areas besides one's major could inspire students’ interest and potential. Take myself as a example, my major is international affairs, however, last summer, I chose a psychology course as my minor, through the course I found that I am prefer psychology to politic, as a result, I want to alter my direction of career from politic to psychology. Without that minor course, I will not have the chance to find my true interests which inspire my potential to pursue success.
Thirdly, in order to better understand the major other fields' knowledge is necessary. For instance, philosophy is the foundation of all subjects, which provides a fundamental approach to thinking about every problem. Whatever your major is, you can benefit from learning it. Mathematics is a useful tool for us in solving problems. If you major is economics or accounting, you will find that the knowledge of mathematics can help you a lot in your research or your work. Therefore we can see that students with varied knowledge would have a great advantage in competing with those who have only limited scope.
Of course, despite all of these advantages of learning various disciplines, the most important disciplines for a student is still those lessons which is related to his or her major. It is the fact that, in order to success in the society, and meet the requirement of job market, special skill is the best tool to find a good job. Overemphasizing the various disciplines will adversely influence the student's learning of his or her major. Besides, major study could help students catch correct analysis method which is useful in their later life.
In sum up, a university should offer various disciplines to students in order to enhance their development
while ensure the major study is also important, students should take balance the two aspects, only in this way can they get much benefits from university education and make good preparation to achieve their goal.
