还有十几天, 望各路英雄狠拍,指出问题, 好让小弟少走弯路。深知看这么一篇长文章的痛苦, 在此深深的感谢各位给出意见的版友。 谢谢。。
在此,顺征一位同期的考友互改。
TOPIC: ISSUE103 - "The study ofhistory has value only to the extent that it is relevant to our dailylives."
逻辑:
1.
"One cannot connect the dots lookingforward, you can only connect them looking backwards," said by Applecompany CEO Steve Jobs, to illustrate that hardly could one decide which courseto learn is valuable for future. Similarly, no one can ever possibly made an accurate judgment of the inner and genuine relevance between a certain piece ofhistory and our daily lives, based on current inherently limited knowledge andvalue system. With the passing of time, a specific piece of history, seemed have little relationship to us, might be tightly relevant to our mundane life someday. On the other hand, some histories that is not immediately relevant toour daily lives still bear considerable merits for our mankind to study at present.
For sure, history directly relevant to ourlives does provide us with significant benefits. Mostly it serves as precious experience to guide our daily lives. The history data of climate in specific region, for instance, plays an important role in agriculture. Farmers study the climate history data to figure out a law and trend which helps them to plan the agricultural activities such as picking a suitable time to plant seeds.
However, A specific period of history might has nothing to do with our lives at first when we overlook the inner relevance between it and our lives, yet it might be of paramount value for all of us sometime. It is too late for us to exploit in the relevant history when the severe problem has already crashed into our lives. Then what history is relevant to ourdaily lives? Undoubtedly, one barely could offer a perfect answer to thisquestion for our value system are, to a great extent, restricted by definite knowledge of particular era we are in. And if we only study those history thatare relevant to our lives for pragmatic purposes, in the light of the statementthat the study of history has value only to the extent that it is relevant toour daily lives, the consequence might be detrimental, or even disastrous toour society. Consider The Great Recession which is seldom talked about or offeredany interest in by people when economy is in good condition few years ago.Nevertheless, it serves as an unique and indispensable history for us to study as we are confronted by a new staggering financial turmoil at present.
Even history without immediate relevance toour everyday lives, indeed provides considerable merits that cannot be ignored currently. To begin with, history informed us the mistakes we have made in pastand help us to avoid it and not to repeat it. Only one have learned thebrutality and fierceness of a war, he could gain a fully understanding of theimportance of peace. We are all well lessoned by the great tragedy in humanhistory--the Second World War that took about 60 million people's lives in theworld. The more we know about that war, the more we cherish the peace we shareand enjoy today. We as all human in the world are trying hard to protect thisprecious peace
knowing that the expense of repeating mistakes of waging war again is too heavy for anyone to withstand.
In addition, history also is an excellent training in citizenship. Studying the history of Americawould enhance our tolerance and respect for different people and differentviews as we gather together in this land to build a country--America regardless of race, color, and creed. Learning the history of dictatorship and tyranny in the past, people would rather go out to perform their right to votesince they know how important voting is to a democratic system. The Low voter turnout situation could then be ameliorated. Moreover, history also is a perfect source to educate citizens about patriotism. One barely have any idea about patriotism until he develop a completely understanding of history of the establishment of our country and breed a sense of belonging to this countryfrom within.
History is one of the most valuable treasures human possesses. Our study of history should not be occupied by the pragmatism viewpoint that only studies history immediate relevant to our lives. The value of various kind of history whether or not has a quick relevance to our daily lives is beyond our imagination. There is a saying might illustratethis point and I quoted here, "The present is all too fleeting, the futureis anybody's guess. The past is all we have, and we should profit fromit." |
