What is the most essential quality of an effective leader? To some extent I believe, just as the statement puts, that an effective leader should have the ability to remain consistently committed to particular principles and objectives. However, I consider the following statement that any leader who is quickly and easily influenced by shifts in popular opinion will accomplish little to be an extremist one. This is somehow due to a vague definition of the term "being influenced" - an action which can be actively as well as passively.
Before redefinite the vague term, I must admit the validity of remaining consistently committed to particular principles and objectives. It is obvious that leader with this kind of quality is more likely to have a great attainment. A striking example comes from Chinese national war against the Japanese, where China's great revolutionary leader Chairman Mao insisted to fight against the invaders while most of the others found it pessimistic about the war which apparently had no hope at that time. The result is obvious that after eight hard years China has finally won their independence. Another example is famous leader of the African Americans - Dr Martin Luther King, Jr, a man who refused to use violence which most colored people tended to in their fight against racial discrimination, and thus finally won his fighting. Both of the example reveal a simple principle that leaders must hold on their particular principles in order to have attainment.
However, it does not mean that leaders could ignore public opinions. Let us redefinite the term "being influenced" now. In my point of view, to be influence has two separate meanings: one is to be influence passively while the other is to actively harken the populace's voice. If a leader is kind of person who has not got his/her own position on some certain issues, and is likely to change his/her ideas due to other different points of view, which is just the opposite example of the two I have given above, the leader could never become a great one.
So we all know it is of great importance that a public leader must obtain the quality of persisting own principles, by which I mean the leader should take populace' ideas into consideration so that the group which the leader represents can make benefits. For a business leader, it is certain that he should know what his clients’ wants. For a political leader, realizing civilian's wishes also matter greatly. Getting a good knowledge of the public's ideas timely will surely help a lot for a leader to switch to more appropriate decisions. Besides, to be influenced by popular opinion does not equal to the kind of leader who does not have own point of view. Taking Hitler as an example, by which I do not mean to offend somebody. Hitler was a kind of leader who listened to the public and soon made new promise to cater their wishes while nothing had been changed in his deep heart. This could be easily proved if you scan the history of the 1930's when Hitler made a series oration contented his claims of bringing German people good life while before too long he brought a world war instead. By "being influenced" by the public Hitler kept his premier's office however what had been in his insane mind never changed, and then got his success (at least for Hitler himself at the beginning of the war).
To sum up, I would like to emphasize the importance of persisting on particular principles and objective which serves as a essential quality of an effective leader. Meanwhile, I also wish that leader should pay enough attention on the public voice, which does not mean they have to change their long-term dream and will surely contributes a lot to them and to the public if the leader is someone like Chairman Mao rather than Adolf Hitler.
