TOPIC: ISSUE94 - "Universities should require every student to take a variety of courses outside the student's field of study because acquiring knowledge of various academic disciplines is the best way to become truly educated."
WORDS: 540 TIME: 00:59:30 DATE: 2009-3-11 23:18:09
Being a university student myself, I am surrounded with countless courses provided in college, there are ones you must take, since they are related to you major; there are also some elective courses, which are for you to choose. Here comes the problem: according to the idea that acquiring knowledge of various academic field can help students to be truly educated, should universities reqiure every students to take a variety of courses? As far as I am concerned, universities should require students to take various cuorses, since they will benefit a lot when study some discipline out side their major, however, the ragulation must consider the will of students rather than force them to learn.
To begin with, there is no doubt that interdisciplinary study will apparently contribute to one's study in the college. College students, talented as they are, have their own work to do--the major courses. Since these courses are the daily theme of the students, they will surely face many conundrums. One can work out such riddles by examine them carefully by using the kniwledge one has already learn in the same field. However, one can also find the key to such puzzles when studied some principle in other field. Further more, some realms are interdisciplinary researchs themselves, it is no wonder to use other field's idea in such realms. Besides, as one may have no idea about what he/she likes the most, wide range of courses offered is a good way wo quide such students, and help them to find their favorite discipline. In other words, such variety of chourses provide a second chance of some one to choose his or her career.
However, some people may argue that the purpose of college education is to find an adequate job for one, it is waste of time to learn other fields' contents, since the future works will not ask you to act like an encyclopedia. I agree with such idea, we are, at least most of us, stuying for our future career, yet how many of us can garantee that they will 100% confidence in job hunting? Let alone the possibility of find a job that is just the same field of your major. Even if finding a job is not a big problem, one can hardly say that he or she will only contact with those who have some major as he/she, or deals with only those which are highly concerned with the exact major he/she is in. Graduation is not end of Education. On the other hand, when equiped with some other knowledge, it can be a great help in many cases. A economist with some technological idea can be more confident in investing the industrial enterprise.
Plus, such good idea must consider the will of students to prevent undesirable situation. It is widely acceped that one become most efficient when dealing with affairs that he or she is eager to do. On the contrary, when facing problems someone does not like, the result seldom be good. The university should to consider such situation, and therefore to prevent forcing students to choosing courses that they do not like.
In sum, universities should require students to take various cuorses, however, they should also awared of doing it too compulsory.
这次写作严重超时……本来想试试尽量少用例子的,可是又没思路,写的也完全不像话……请多提点意见吧…… |
