Artists should keep a balance between considering the criticism from the critics and holding on their independence and creativity. Rejecting the dross and assimilating the essence is their best choice.
An art critic, a person who specializes in evaluating art, to some extent, to represent the opinions of the authority, always has a significant influence on society and even the history of art. The responsibility and missions on critics’ shoulder is to interpret the cultural connotation in art in order to lead the public’s spiritual growth and thus they can enable the development of art to flourish.
Profound criticism from critics can have positive effect on art , rather than tends to undermine and constrain the artist's creativity. On one hand , critics with abundant accumulation of knowledge of art and history, who experience deeper in the general law of social development, cultural change, the impact of civilization, can promote the artists’ understanding of the characteristics and the inner discipline in their works ,with the result that artists absorb the quintessence of the comments in their creation for right direction and greater achievement. On the other hand, insight criticism directly impact on the exertion of the social function of art by the objective analysis to enhance public’s appreciation and understanding of art. The criticism reaching the advanced level of its time not only can support, encourage and guide some contemporary artists, but also have an great effect on other contemporary artists’ thought tendency and creation tendency, even change a generational art style and contribute to the constitution of new aesthetic ideal in some time. For example, the unprecedented prosperity in critical realism literature in Russia in 19th century democratism was closely linked to the literary critics like Belinsky,Chernyshevsky NG, and Dobralubov .Here I want to introduce one thing Belinsky did to support my opinion above. Nikolai Vasilievich Gogol, a Russian writer who presented his work as a satire on the venality of Russian bureaucracy, was sieged by reactionism critics and thus was on tenterhooks . However, just at this time, Belinsky fully recognized Gogol’s thought and art value by a article in which he pointed out the important and urgent meaning of the coming of critical realism ,with great passion and eloquent words. It gave Gogol great encouragement and motives to stick to his creation so that he produced his immoral works, such as his novel Dead Souls. Moreover, this case also encourage many contemporary writers, such as Turgenev, Nikolai Nekrasov and so on. As a consequence, it boosted the development of Russian critical realism.
Moreover, criticism from a historical height can help point out and correct the misleading developing direction of art. A century ago, there were numbers of different schools of art in Western, however, few could stand over time and exist today. Among them, Dadaism, a cultural movement which primarily involved visual arts,literature—poetry, art manifestoes, art theory—theatre, and graphic design and concentrated on its anti-war politics through a rejection of the prevailing standards in art through anti-art cultural works, originated from 1919 and collapsed in 1923.Its short-lived existence is attributed to its barren spiritual connotation and its neglect of criticism that pointed to its wrong developmental direction. Dadaism refused to admit its limitation and inevitable extinction if it didn’t change its direction and emotional emptiness pointed by critics. In the end,the regardless of insightful remarks caused it to become quickly immersed in a vast sea of time. From above, we can see the importance of critics to indicate the shortcomings for artists. If artists don’t accept it humbly, their achievements are temporary and may be forgotten by history quickly.
Admittedly, not all critics can guarantee the objective without his favor or have enough insight in the history and the art tendency so that it causes some regret in the history of art.Unfortunately, Van Gogh, famous for his paintings as a post-impressionist artist in the world now, is one of the great artists ahead of time. In his time, no appreciation from critics and public led to his tragedy of life. However, he chose tomaintain his creativity and independence no matter what negative criticism was pointed to him and whether someone could understand his advance thought. It was his confidence to support him to continue to create the masterpieces we can marvel at today. Thus, sometimes criticism tend to undermine artists’ creativity. At this time, whether to drift with the current depends on whether artists persist to their ideas.

In sum, artists should pay attention to profound and insightful criticism from outstanding critics with abundant accumulation of knowledge of art and history, for it may enhance artists’ confidence and determination to go further in art when the artists ahead of their time can’t be accepted by a majority or lead their art back to right direction. However, faced with worldly points of view which may prevent them from progress and treat their epoch-making ideas as worthless, artists should stick to their principles if only they believe that their art moves towards the right way and it actually does. Thus, artists should make a sensible choice accordingly.
