TOPIC: ISSUE103 - "The study of history has value only to the extent that it is relevant to our daily lives."
WORDS: 508 TIME: 00:45:00 DATE: 2009-3-17 20:32:00
As modern science has shown that there is nothing absolutely statistic, our contemporary society undergoes change. In our daily life, there are many things that are significantly different from those in history. Therefore, many people assert that it is of no use to study the history and they think that only when it is relevant to our daily lives, the study of history has value just as the statement above. However, as far as I am concerned, we can get a lot of benefits from the study of history, which can enhance and promote our development and well-being.
No one can deny the fact that history can serve as the precedent and prediction. Just as history is often compared as mirror, we can get a lot of lessons from history, which can help us to avoid repeating the same mistakes. For instance, many commanders learn much from the previous wars and avoid making some similar mistakes in their experience. From history, we can get another perspective on human life and society and sometimes get some inspiration that help us weather some adversity in our daily life. Besides, we can also use history to predict something in the future. Nowadays we face two main problems--pollution and resource exhaustion. Many others, such as species extinction, global warming, urban noise and congestion, etc, can be seen as aspects of these two major problems. From the study of hitory, we can find the reasons that contribute to these two problems, and then we can carry out measures to cope with the problems.
What's more, we can search our culture roots from the study of history, which is vital for us to maintain our culture. However, many people fail to realize the importance of this case. For instance, many Asian composers are satisfied with emulating the west, but reluctant to search for their own roots. The results are such that one can find German accents in the music of Taiwan composers who go to Germany and Austria. Without cultural roots, all artistic traditions wither, just as the acient Chinese musical tradition almost has, For a composer not to possess a true knowledge of one's own roots is to surrend one's artistic independence. Worse, it means dening oneself as the opportunity to be part of a historic process of cultural mingling leading to the mainstream of tomorrow.
The history can also serve as a source of national cohesion and civil patriotism. There are so many heroes and significant events in history that can evoke our patriotism. Through the study of history, we can learn many legacies and heritages of our nation, which can promote our pride of our country. Therefore, many governments have emphasize the importance of the study of history and encourage every citizen to study the history of their country. In this process, we can also learn the differences of different ethnics and can better communicate and understand each other.
As a old saying goes, "A man's fault is another man's lesson"; to this I would add: "To learn from history is progress". |
