There is much controversy regarding whether it is the artist or the critic that can give society something of lasting value. As far as I am concerned, I admit that critic does offer value to the society, however it is the artist that grants society something of lasting value which is not ephemeral.

Admittedly, critic does give society something of value. It is with the help of the critics that we get a good recommendation on a new film, a fresh novel and a new record music. Critics also serve to assist us to understand the underlying meaning of a sometime sophisticated art form. More importantly, artist occasionally can get inspiration from the evaluation of the critics on their work and process these elements for their production of a new work. In my point of view, however, none of these values provided by critics can be seen as lasting value.

Turning to the role of the critics and artists, we can easily see that critics are only a supporting role but the artists act as a main character in the long history; therefore, it is both the artists and their works remain erasable from history. It is always the names of the artists and the creation of the artists that people, from generation to generation, accolade. Van Gogh, Beethoven and Shakespeare are the names that we still remember and speak highly of even today. It is the Sunflower, the Fifth Symphony and Hamlet that critics even today lay their evaluation on. But few names of the critics in the history that we care to remember. Few articles of these critics get to prevail until today.

Moreover, turning to the power of the impact, it is always the creation of the artists that provide many long lasting influences to its audiences. Art can guide and inspire like a good tutor. The “Lion King” has given many people the courage to face their troubled past and live a fresh new life. The “Titanic” grants people fresh insight into life and start to cherish every minute that they are having and sees everyday as the last day of their life. Moreover, art can offer people a wash to their soul and even salvage the evil from inferno. A murderer admitted his wrong deed of committing homicide after watching the “The Passion of the Christ”. A prisoner made his decision to rehabilitate after hearing the music from Mozart “The Marriage of Figaro” and many years later, he still remembered the shock to his soul that the opera impact him. Art can even act as a therapy to those who suffer personal loss and emotional hurt. A lady enjoyed the “Ma Ma Mia” Broadway show for hundreds of times and says that it gives her comfort and support and works as a psychological therapy. Furthermore, arts can be appreciated by our off springs even thousands of years later just like people of today are still enjoying the arts of our ancestors. Non of these merits of the arts mentioned above can be found in the work of the critics.

In conclusion, although critics do provide something that of value to the society, none of them are lasting. However, it is the artist, the main character in the creation of art, provide long last value to guild, inspire, nurture the viewer from generation to generation; give them support, encouragement, and even act as psychological therapy.
