===================================
In my opinion, the statement that teacher should be paid in accordance with his or her students' performance is wrong and equivocal. It ingores the other factors in deciding the pay of a teacher except their outcome. What's more, it fails to list the requirements or indicators to quantify the students' performance into teacher's salaries. Now I'll discuss the two pitfalls one by one.
Though it is widely accepted that the best way to evaluate a teacher is to evaluate his student first, teacher is not born for his student. There are three parties in the education of a certain student - his teacher, his parents and the society. The behavior of one student, which associated well with his performance, is not the only result of his teacher's instruction. So, if the statement was put into practise and became a policy, students should be taken into several parts and be examined to find which parts are only influenced by their teacher. Based on the examination, it is persuasive to require teacher to abide by the policy.
Secondly, the standard for measuring students' performance is equivocal. Should it be the rate of college enrollment? Or the number of student who gets straight A during three years? Or the comprehensive abilities of the student? If the policy is about to be in practice, it should indicate the clear and detailous definition about what the performance means and which details this word covers. Or else, people in charge of the wages and bonuses will find themselves puzzled in deciding how much each teacher should receive this month.
Then, even if there is some fixed and well-accepted stardard, say, the average score of final examination one class is the criteria, the policy is unfair to both teachers and students. In some schools, students are divided into different types and assigned to different classes by their scores of the level test before registration. In this case, teacher who teaches class consisting all the good student selected previously have advantages. Besides, teacher with disadvatanges may do something out of rule to shorten the disparity, or even do something harm to express their discontent. To students, especially those who are poor in study, they will have pressure and fear once they know their score are linked with their teacher's salaries. Sometimes, they may even takes themselves as burden.
Admittedly, teachers' wages should have to do with their performance, which in some senses is also the performance of their students, but the wages cannot totally depend on it. As in most companies, the wages contains two parts - one for fixed wages, and another for performance wages or commissons. So as to the teachers, things can be the same. They should be evaluated and the scores on their performance make up for part of their wages - just the performance part.
As discussed above, judging and paying for teacher by their students' performance is not a good idea, at least from the aspect of application. |
