07/07/07: Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? University students should be required to take basic science classes even they are not part of the field of the study. Use specific reasons and examples to support your answer.

Basic science classes, as the fundament of each knowledge system, absolutely should be attached enough importance to ensure that it is possible for students to learn something more sophisticated later. But is it the same situation for college students? Some people may hold the positive attitude. In my opinion, however, basic science is not necessary for university education because it brings nothing valuable to students and even some detrimental influences.

In the first place, learning basic science would cost much precious time of students, but bring no contribution. College education should impart students some professional knowledge in certain majors, the basic science indoctrination is the aim of middle school teachers to accomplish. For example, there are various class set in mid school such as literature, history, physics, chemistry and so forth. So why should college students do the same things they have done outstandingly before. In a brief, it is meaningless to learn basic science once again in university.

Additionally, putting basic science into college students’ task would definitely overburden their life. College life is not as leisure as public thought, nearly every students have countless assignments to finish and suffered excessive pressure coming from different parts of life. For example, in my major, EE, our schedule always filled with a great numbers of experiments to approach and numerous papers to write. And something time we have to be involved in students work like organizing the ceremony and holding basketball match. If these basic courses were brought into our life, everybody would become crazy due to the unbearable stress.

Last but not least, adding the basic courses to college students’ life would decrease their enthusiasm of learning. In university, every student has been divided to a certain area so they only need to absorb the related knowledge. But if they are required to attend the class without any relationship to your major all the time, can they keep positive day by day? Take the mathematics for example. To the English major students, how can these complicated formulas and theorems carry benefit to their study? And these things always seem difficult so that leading them elude studying. Accordingly, spending time on the unrelated basic science would make students less interested in study.

To sum up, it is not a wise way to put the basic science study into university education since it would cost much precious time, and make students bear more pressure, and weaken the aspiration of them to gain knowledge.
