Why phd in US?

With 7 years of excellent teaching and researching experience at XXX University, I plan to get a phd degree to enhance my educational background and competitiveness in order to realize my career goal which is to become a full professor no later than 40 at a well known Chinese university.

Future plan?

After graduation, I’ll probably continue my academic career at a university, hopefully better than current one. I hope I can have my own lab, conduct my own research with some graduate students.

Why come back?

According to the development plans of my university and some other univs, they will be recruiting a lot of academicians with overseas background and offering better positions.

An overseas phd gives me a shortcut for my career and more research opportunities.

Why not study in China? (我觉得这个回答的不好，有些泛泛)

I’ve finished my master’s study in China. I know what’s gonna happen if I continue my doctorial study just like many of my colleagues did.

I won’t simply repeat their history because there are already lots of local phd graduates.

An overseas phd gives me a competitive advantage over them.

What will you study and why?

I haven’t made the final decision yet, but I’ll choose between ML and SE.

My master’s study focused on ML. It has become the cutting-edge of artificial intelligence recent years and it lays the foundation of many other researches. I used ML techniques to solve some theoretical problems. For my doctorial study, I wanna focus on more practical areas such as NLP and CV.

I have been teaching SE for 5 years. Though China’s software industry is fast developing, it’s not well disciplined and properly guided. A lot of companies are making software without scientific guidance. SE tries to solve these problems. I’ve helped some companies to build up or regulate their working process and standards. I think SE has a promising future in both academics and industry.

Why this university?

It as a strong faculty on ML and SE, both are to my interests of study. Though it doesn’t have a high ranking, I think the match of interests is more important than fame for a phd student.

How do you know this university?

I’ve met with the head of the department when he came to XXX for a cooperation project. I knew from him that XXX is fast developing and it has a lot of professors doing excellent research in my field.

楼主的回答不错了……为什么不在中国学习，这个问题可以结合两者对比来谈，例如你申请的这间学校很好，尤其是FACULTY很不错，比现在国内的这间要好；或者结合实验室等优势来谈就可以了。

After graduation, I plan to find a faculty position at a better university and to set up my own research lab on ML.

Why come back?
They are recruiting a lot of overseas academicians and offering better positions. With my 7 years academic experience plus an overseas degree, I’m sure I can get more opportunities and reach my goal sooner.

Why not study in China?
I’ve finished my master’s study in China. For my future study, I wanna apply ML techniques to problems of SE. There are few schools in China who has a strong faculty on both areas.

个人觉得WHY PHD IN US还是很泛泛。。。
只看出来你为什么要读PHD。。。没有突出去US的必要性。。。 反正这个问题可以和为什么不在中国念类似。。。 可以结合着回答。。。

为什么不在中国念可不可以说 例如北大等名校已经不喜欢接受本校学生留校任教，认为相同教育环境出来的无法带给学校新鲜的东西，反而鼓励学生出国深造后再回校。
