[活动] 【Dark_Tournament TOEFL-ibt作文小组gundammole第三十次作业】 [复制链接]

Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? It is more important for students to understand ideas and concepts than to learn facts. Use specific reasons and examples to support your answer. (02/14/07; 02/24/07;12/15/07)

In our progress of growth, teachers instructed millions of ideas and concepts to us. They believed that those concepts are highly useful in our daily life. However, when they enjoy the benefit of conceptions, isn't it necessary that they give some consideration to the advantages that examples bring about? As a matter of fact, most of the concepts are useless after school, but examples are helpful for us to make wise decisions. Contrary the opinion of many teachers is my heartfelt objection to the idea that understanding of ideas and concepts are more important than learning examples.

To begin with, facts can help us to get better understanding of definitions. As Samuel Johnson said in his writer, example is always more efficacious than precept. As a matter of fact, examples are easy to understand and remember. It is often taken for granted in many culture that definitions should be followed by facts. Writing essay in English, for example, can not live without the support of facts. Teacher in New Oriental School stated that each idea show have at least one instance, and graders like it. We need to list up why we like it and give some example to make the idea clear. Accordingly, example speaks louder than concept.

Facts, on the other hand, are sometimes helpful for us to face future challenges. People can be easily persuaded by examples, which is also useful for us to make better decisions when facing crossroads. Examples from histories or from pioneers' experiences are persuasive. For example, by reading celebrity peoples' stories, a friend of mine learned how to be strong. She lost her parents 5 years ago. After that, she had to leave her school life and find a job to support her brother' study. However, she did not defeat by her bad luck. Actually, she read a lot of stories about some disable people who went though even a harder time, she did not give up. Now after that bad period, she is a successful business woman and her brother is a professor in Harvard University. To the already familiar examples, a number of further facts may be added. We should not ignore in effect of examples.

However, every coin has two side, concepts are also necessary especial in literature. Considerable though the advantages that concepts enjoy are, they can not compete with the benefits that examples bring about, when understanding and persuasion are taken into account.
