ARGUMENT173
The following is a memorandum issued by the publisher of a newsmagazine, Newsbeat, in the country of Dinn.
'Our poorest-selling magazine issues over the past three years were those that featured international news stories on their front covers. Over the same period, competing news-magazines have significantly decreased the number of cover stories that they devote to international news. Moreover, the cost of maintaining our foreign bureaus to report on international news is increasing. Therefore, we should decrease our emphasis on international news and refrain from displaying such stories on our magazine covers.'
The argument provides three difference reasons about the why the publisher
should never put more emphasis on international news and keep from displaying such stories on Newsbeat magazine cover. Although after first glance, I found the reasons are reasonable, after several deep thought and investigation, I picked several faults which seems plausible, without ruling out other possibilities and providing more information, it can never arrive at the publisher’s conclusions.
At the beginning, there are many other reasons which can devote to the bad selling of the international news stories on their front covers, but the publisher narrowed the road and just focus on the covers which he said is the reason why lead to the bad selling. A magazine's selling can be determined by many factors, such as the writers in the magazine, the popularity of the issues, the price, the quality and so on. There would be totally possible that the bad selling are because of the content of the magazines which have featured international news stories on their front covers are happen to be boiling themselves, the readers are very interested in the international news stories but found all other contemplate issues are so boiling that they gave up the thought of buying. Or, maybe, they find the covers are attracted to them, but they found that the price is too high, then they became reluctant to buy it. Or, maybe, there are many other kinds of magazines which provide more insightful viewpoint about the international stories, people who like to read that kind of issue could be more likely to choose other kinds of magazines. After the publisher provide more detailed information about the magazines, we may not hastily concluded that it is
the covers that only matters in people choosing a magazine.
Furthermore, it is also groundless to compare with the news-magazines with the Newsbeat’s. The news-magazines significantly decreased the number of cover stories that they devote to international news may have a cascade of explanations. Maybe the journalist who take charge of the international news section is dismissed or taking a leave but the personnel department could not find someone who take place of him, there is no way but to switch their focus into another topics. Even though, the news-magazines decreased the number of cover stories is after they found out that the magazines, covered with international news stories , are actually have the relevant bad selling compared to other covers, there is no information that the Newsbeat and News magazines are a like, except they are both magazines. So the comparison between them is irrational. Even though, they have something in common, it will also groundless to say that if the news-magazines decreased the number of cover stories that they devote to international news means that the Newsbeat magazines should do the same choice as the news magazines. Actually, it may be more chances if the newsbeat magazines insist on publishing international news because the competitor has gave up.
What is more, it maybe the overall rising price due to the world inflation contribute the increasing cost of the maintaining foreign bureaus to report on the international news, and since the passage fails to provide more information about costs of other departments, we may assume that the rise from the international department may the fewest compared to other rises.
From what we have discussed above, the publisher lacks reliable evidence to conform his conclusion. Before any real actions on the international news and retraining, we should be better informationed with the relevance between the bad selling and the international news cover, and the costs in other departments, what is more, to better evaluate market, then the final conclusion can be drawn.
