This memorandum draws a conclusion that the Newsbeat should pay less attention upon international news and terminate the displaying of such stories on magazine covers. To justify this conclusion, the publisher points out that in the past three years, the magazines with the covers featuring by international news stories were sold poorest. Their competing news-magazines, however, in the same period decreased the number of cover stories of international news. The author also points out that the expenditure for maintaining the foreign bureaus to report on international news is increasing. Nevertheless, this argument is flawed in several critical respects.
First of all, the case that the appearance of the international news stories on the front cover leads to the poorly selling of the magazines is quite unconvincing. There are a few of reasons to this phenomenon except the insufficient need of the market. For instance, The department of Newsbeat responsible for editing international news are not that much qualified , the article written by them can not competent with them of their counterparts. People always choose the better, in that condition, the publisher could not anticipate for agreeable sales. It shows the pessimistic method of decreasing the international news on the cover is not necessary.
A Second problem with the argument is that it unjustifiably assumes that since the competing magazines had done the adjustment, so had the Newsbeat. The author fails to support any surveys on whether the counterparts to them have the same situation. Without surveys, things might be totally distinct. Assuming one of the counterpart has an advantage position in cars-column, what they had done were accommodated to themselves to new environment with the purpose of taking fully use of their advantage. Thus, they decreased the space of international news stories to meet the extension of cars-column. Additionally, it is the vacuum of the market full of challenge and opportunity that the author should focus on, for which, the decreasing rather than meliorating seems not advisable leaving behind after the adjustment of the counterparts. Therefore, any decision made by this evidence must be based on more thorough investigation to gather sufficient data in order to narrow down and locate the actual function of the evidence.
Thirdly, with the pace of the economy development, the ascendable maintaining cost comes to many of the bureaus, but not only the foreign one. Why the bureaus reporting on the international news should be cancelled? Case the author shows not enough emphasize on is that if this kind of increasing cost was worthwhile to the Newsbeat. From the common sense, if each dollar increased profits two, each bureaus maintains. So the solution making people accept the international news is the one on the ground, not those superficial features.
In sum, before the decision is made which to decrease the emphasize on the international news and to restrain the relative stories on the magazines’ front covers, author should provide more detail investigation on the reasons why people have not interested in Newsbeat’s international news, the counterpart decreases on the international news, moreover if effective adjustment is operated, the budget whether or not let the bureaus sustain.
