144"It is the artist, not the critic,* who gives society something of lasting value."
*a person who evaluates works of art, such as novels, films, music, paintings, etc.
I agree with this statement that artists create their great works which give society something of lasting value, nevertheless, the critics, who contribute to help artists achieve this value should not be neglect.
Admittedly, artists do create lots of works value to the society, and they will not disappear as time goes on. On one side, artistic works, they give people an aesthetic comfort. People like to appreciate them at the moment they want to adjust and relax themselves. Just like Beethoven music, Walt Whitman’s poets, Van Gogh’s paintings, etc. They are sounded, read and looked so beautiful, this is why they still kept and loved by people instead of being forgotten. On the other side, as something beyond the works, they can give people a spirit to inspire them to move on, or even give a direction to them. That is why we often want to watch a movie about encouragement when we frustrated or get lost. Actually, artistic works have existed for almost as long as humankind: from early pre-historic art to contemporary art, art has become the fountain of people’s delight and relief, the medium between people and world, and which to make the world the whole and perfect.
Simple put, artistic works which make lots of sense are create to enrich people’s life, make people happy, however, how can people understand the true meaning of their works which always express in an artistic way implicitly? Then, it is critic that teaches us common knowledge to learn to appreciate the value of an artifact, by methods of evaluating, critiquing, and praising, etc. It is critics who help artist’s works to be understood, valued and enjoyed by the society.
Without critics, the artistic works will be just materials as what they look as, the great meaningful and spirit value of the art will be buried under the deep earth. This is such a enormous loss of human society. For example, the great painter Van Gogh who lives a poor life before his death, he even could not make ends meet. He had created many amazing breathtaking works, but it is not until his death that some critics discover the value of his painting. He becomes more and more famous. Imagine there were none critic in the world, we may never know a guy named Van Gogh, let alone to enjoy his masterpiece. So we can see the great contribution the critic has made and they are keeping giving us different kinds of great work done by artist.
In summary, we should remember artist who create the great works, and we should never neglect the importance of the critic who discover the lasting value hidden somewhere and help the artist to improve his or her work. They are together to leads us to a colorful and meaningful life and give us something of lasting value. |
