Great changes have taken place along with the development of technologies. Computers insinuate into every hook corner of the world, thereby enhancing the efficiency and productivity tremendously; machines take over the performances of mundane and repetitive task; thereby emancipating people from burdensome work. Flying in face of this statement, as an indispensible part of human civilization, technology does influence social customs and ethics, yet it can hardly determine them.
It is manifest that the breakthroughs of technologies, more often than not, trigger the transformation of social customs. To illustrate, In the past, people have to draw pictures or make notes for a long time to record things, now digital cameras allow people to capture picturesque scenery and unforgettable moments less than a second; In the past, people have to rely on horses or camels to travel, now automobile provide people with golden opportunities to travel whenever and wherever. It seems that technology possess some omnipotent force to change the way we live, the way we perceive the outside world. At the same time, old thing has been replaced by the now one. For instance, in ancient China, women bind their feet to cater for the alleged standard of beauty, despite the fact that they suffered from great pain and permanent disability. But now, as a result of Industrial Revolution, people have realized that this traditional custom hampered the progress of the society so that it was abandoned. Likewise, ancient Chinese people hold the belief that the thunder and Levin are caused by angry god and thus they live with constant fear that god will be irritated. But now, owing to the development of technology, those superstitions are broken down and they know all those things are merely natural phenomenon. In a word, all these changes in social custom and ethics derive from the development of technology.
However, complicated as social customs and ethics are, there are various factors exert influence on them. More specifically, they are passed down by our ancestors with so many vital elements such as the history background, the religion, the natural condition. The dragon boat festival is a convincing example as this time-honored tradition is closely related to certain historical story but has little to do with the technology. At that time, Qu Yuan, the patriotic poet, committed suicide by jumping into the river, for his motherland was occupied by the enemy country. In order to rescue him and prevent his body was devoured by fish, local people were driving dragon boat and threw Zongzi into river. Without this cultural background, we could not have this festival, not to mention the custom of eating Zongzi and racing dragon boat. Similarly, America people could not have celebrated Thanks giving day if the historical event that aboriginal people assisted the new immigrants had not existed. Apparently, those customs are marked by identity of a nation rather than technology. Moreover, religion also casts shadow on a nation’s customs and ethics. Jesus was accused of high treason and thus the Romans were crucifying and persecuting them. The reason why Romans kill Jesus Christ should attribute to religion belief instead of technology effect.
Furthermore, ethics, which is the study of the general nature of morals and of the specific moral choices to be made by a person, also bears no resemblance to technology. Even though technology develops at an eye-dazzling rate, it can never alter people’s attitude towards some eternal issues like truth, goodness, excellence and so on. Those virtues are deeply rooted in people’s mind and the importance will not fade away.
Overall, technology does influence social customs and ethics to great extent, but it just plays an assistant role rather than a determine one. History factors, religions, human nature and technology work together to impact the social customs and ethics. |
