65. "For many years all the stores in our chain have stocked a wide variety of both domestic and imported cheeses. Last year, however, the five best-selling cheeses at our newest store were all domestic cheddar cheeses from Wisconsin. Furthermore, a recent survey by Cheeses of the World magazine indicates an increasing preference for domestic cheeses among its subscribers. Since our company can reduce expenses by limiting inventory, the best way to improve profits in all of our stores is to discontinue stocking many of our varieties of imported cheese and concentrate primarily on domestic cheeses."

论据:

In this argument above, the author concludes that the best way to expand their profits through focusing the selling of domestic cheeses. To substantiate this point of view, the arguer shows that all of the top five stores among the new stores sell domestic cheddar cheeses. Following is a survey conducted by Cheeses of the World magazine which indicates the consuming trend of domestic cheeses and says subscribers prefer domestic cheeses to imported cheeses. In addition, by saying "our company can reduce expenses by limiting inventory", the arguer makes the conclusion cursorily. Although the argument might make reader convinced without taking a second consideration, it turns out to be unreasonable any away.

To begin with, we consider the issue on the basis of admitting the fact that the best selling of the five newest stores are domestic cheddar cheeses. However, it can not prove that domestic cheeses can produce more profits than imported ones. It is highly possible that other factors might lead to such results. For example, during that period, the imported cheeses storage has dropped quite a low point and the new stores have to sell the domestic ones in larger proportions in their respective areas. Thus consumers have no other choices but have to subscribe the domestic ones. In addition, the fact just tells the new store's story but not all of the chain stores. No doubt, it lacks the universality and the best-selling of imported cheeses may exist in some other old stores due to some reasons, such as the unique folk-custom and economical discrepancy.

Moreover, the best-selling does not necessarily mean the better profits under some circumstances. The quantity of the products as well as the unit price and cost collectively determines the profit of products. However, the arguer failed to mention the unit price of the two different cheeses. As a result, it is wrong to hastily make a judgment that the best-selling equates to good profits. For example, if the unit price of the imported cheesed is 8 while the domestic one is 2 and the comparing amount of their selling is 3 and 6 separately; also their cost is 4 and 1 respectively. Obviously, the terminal profits in selling the imported cheeses are much higher than the domestic ones.

Thirdly, the survey by Cheeses of the World magazine used here to support arguer's view is not cogent either. We need make clear that whether the survey conducted in the worldwide level or just in some certain and unique nations. Let's keep in mind that one country is culturally and geographically different from another. In some countries, producing cheeses and exporting them might be very important industry and people in those countries may see consuming their own nation's products only as patriotism. On other hand, in our own country, if things turn out to be opposite way and it becomes a fashion to buy imported products, how can the survey support arguer's position in all of these cases?

At last, limiting the inventory indeed can reduce the cost in shortsighted look but this is not the provident choice. Moreover, here the logic between limiting inventory to reduce expenses and improving profits by eliminating the imported cheeses stocking while emphasizing on domestic cheeses stocking seems obscure. Eliminating imported cheeses while emphasizing on domestic cheeses stocking may lead the total amount of stocking expand but not decrease.

In conclusion, the arguer fails to convince readers that the best way to expand their profits by focusing the selling of domestic cheeses, because the evidences explicated by arguer do not lend strong support to what the author argues. To make the argument more convincing, it should convey more information and explanation on the surveys about the best-selling. Additionally, he would have to make clear if the survey made by the Cheeses of the World magazine is effective and make the logic much more reasonable. Therefore, if the argument had included the given factors discussed above, it would have been much sounder and logically acceptable.
