Tradition and modernization are imcompatible. One must choose between them.”

The author makes such an utter claim that he/she does not see any possiblities that tradition and modernization could be compatible. Must one choose one and give up another? There is no need to make a choice between them because they are immutal, even contribute to each other. Tradition represents the traits of a nation and the culture they heritage from their ancestors, it has been part of folks life for a long time. Modernization is the achievement of human being development and
mankind to reach this level is not by abandoning traditon but by deep-absorbing and well-utilizing the wisdom accumulated by generations.

Tradition is the root of human being and the basis of the further development of each society. Most of the western countries have Christmas Day, but only United States has Thanks giving Day. People in western countries spend New Year’s Day on the first day of solar calendar, while in China people are accustomed to having spring festival on the first day of lunar calendar. Brazil people has Carnival and Irish people has St. Patrick’s Day. That is tradition, which in Latin means “hanging over, passing on”. Tradition is not just the festivals people spend, the costumes people wear, it is, moreover, the culture the nation have, the spirit the folk hold; it is something flows in the blood of every nation, which unites a nation together. A person without tradition is rootless, hence we can never abandon it.

On the other hand, modernization is not opposite to tradition. It is the necessary result of the development of society and the benifite of science and civilization, and the same time it contributes in the furtherance of a higher level of the society. The invention of the electric bulb brings not only the brightness to the night but also the human being future. The invention of vehicle, like cars, trains, planes, brings much convenience to people and gradually increases the possibilty of the global village. The invention of computer leads human being into a much more advanced era, in which people invent many new things using the technology of computer. The benefit of the advanced techology, science and ideas faciliates human being evolvement and the process of the society.

People may think that tradition would give way to modernization by simply comparision, while the two can be compatible. For instance, many buildings with millions history have been reserved in Europe. The historic appearance of these architecture is so amazing while the inner is totally modern with each faciliaties. Thus the residents can live in the buildings and the same time the ancient look of them would attracts large numbers of tourists to visit and increase the economy growth. Modernization does not have to sacrifice traditon, it even can used to protect traditional things. Such as modern technology helps return culture relic to original condition and the best way to keep therm from being rusty. Many countries build museums to keep historic relic, which is considered as traditional culture. Another example is that more and more designers add traditional elements into fashion design and make tradition and modernization perfectly fuse together. As long as people are willing to reserve tradition, modernization will not become the obstacle of tradition, on the contrary, with the help of modern technology and science, tradition will be better heritaged. In return tradition will faciliate the modernization process too. The traditional culture system like Confucianism and Taoism help people to think about the nature and mankind, the rich and the poor, in this way the sciety will develop more.

To sum it up, tradition and modernization can be compatible and even can faciliate each other. It can never say which is better, because both of them have the value, from which mankind benefit a lot. Hence we can avoid a dilemma to make a choice between them. If we utilize their advantages to contribute the society, tradition and modernization can develop parallelly.
