In an earthquake, the ground beneath you gives way. It’s no longer the one thing you can count on to be solid and stable. Instead, it swerves, dips and waves. And now scientists are saying that earthquakes can cause the ground to do something they didn’t expect—to bounce up and down like a trampoline.
Scientists at Japan’s National Institute for Earth Science and Disaster Prevention analyzed information from a recent quake in their country. They noticed that the ground jolted around in a way that couldn’t be explained with traditional models. They report their findings in the October 31st issue of the journal Science.
According to common models, earthquakes are expected to ripple horizontally—and the resulting up-down waves should be symmetrical. The June quake had rapidly accelerating up and down movement, with asymmetrical waves—and much higher peaks. The researchers propose【v.  计划, 建议, 打算; 打算, 求婚】 a new model of how the soil is behaving. They say that lighter soil is bouncing off the tougher crust beneath it. Understanding how this process works is important for the architects and engineers who design bridges and buildings to withstand an earthquake’s shake.

So take this little test: if you were interested in pursuing a partner for a short-term relationship which would you be most interested in…their face or their body?
And for a long-term relationship, face or body? That is, if you were forced to choose, of course.
Well two PhD students and their advisor, David Buss professor of psychology at the University of Texas at Austin, did force people to make this very choice. They asked 375 college students to pick whether to date someone based on either seen[seeing] just their face or seen just their body.

Nearly all participants chose to see the face. Except for one of the sexes in one situation.
Can you guess which one?
Here’s Jaime Confer, one of the student researchers:
"Everyone was more interested in the opposite sex person’s face than their body—except for men in the short-term mating condition."
Which implies what?
"so that is when men [were] evaluating a [hypercitical female may as a] short-term mate for a one-night stand they showed about equal interest in her face and body instead of the face just winning by a blowout."
For long-term 75 percent of male participants wanted to see the face, but for short-term flings 50 percent of men chose face and 50 percent chose the body.
And why would this be?
"Because cues of immediate fertility which are more important to a man pursuing short-term [?] relationships are more densely[adv.  浓密地, 稠密地; 密集地] concentrated in her body than in her face. Where as her face may have more cues of reproductive value like age and health."
Such as?
"Skin and wrinkling gives a cue to her age and her reproductive value. So if I'm going to secure this woman for many years, I want to make sure she’s not at the tail end of the fertility window."
but presumably you could tell that also by just looking at her body, as well, right?
"You could but it might be relatively more concentrated in her face than in her body [but there is significant over lap and cues accorse the simple body] ."
And this is not the case in men?
"There is not this huge discrepancy in cues that women are interested in, like his good genes cues and good dad cues, health and symmetry. Those are present in face and body equally."
Freud famously asked, what do women want.
I guess it was clear to him what men wanted.

The 12 million Americans with sleep apnea【n.  呼吸暂停; 窒息】 stop breathing for short periods during the night, sometimes hundreds of times. Now a new study finds that a good motivator【n.  激发因素, 动力, 动因】 for some apnea sufferers to get treatment could be improved athletic performance. Because golfers with obstructive apnea who regularly used the machine that keeps them breathing lowered their handicap by up to three strokes.
The study was presented at CHEST 2009, the annual meeting of the American College of Chest Physicians.
Twelve golfers with apnea received nasal【adj.  鼻的, 护鼻的, 鼻声的】 positive airway pressure treatment, or NPAP. The researchers kept track of the subjects’ daytime tiredness, sleep and golf scores over 20 rounds. And handicaps improved by an average of a stroke-and-a-half per round. With the better golfers going in showing the most improvement. The scores on the medical tests also got better. A control group didn’t improve their game or their sleep.
The researchers hope that lower golf scores can be something that motivates some apnea patients to comply with their treatment more. Because dropping three strokes is a sleepy golfer’s dream

12 million Americans with sleep apnea, you know, stop breathing for short periods during the night, sometimes hundreds of times. Now a new study finds that (a) good motivator for (some) apnea suffers to get treatment could be improved at alphaletical (athletic) performance. Because golfers were upjeger (with obstructive) apnea who regularly used machine that keeps some(them) breathing lowered their handicap with free (by up to three) strokes.

The study was presented at CHEST 2009 in the annual meeting of the American colleges of chest physicians.

12 golfers with apnea received XXX (nasal: a.鼻的,有鼻音的) positive airway (pressure) treatment or impep(NPAP). The researchers kept track (of) subjects’ daytime tiredness, sleep and golf scores over 12 rounds. And handicaps were proved (improved) by every (an average of a) stroke and a half per round. With the better golfer going in showing the most improvement, the score on the medical test also got better. A control group didn’t improve their game or their sleep.

The researchers hope that the lower golf scores can be something that motivates some apnea patients to comply with the treatment more, because dropping free strokes is the sleepy golfers’ dream.
