Through the years, evolution has cooked up some[in] pretty remarkable adaptations. The finch’s beak, the giraffe’s neck and sprinter’s toes. Yes, scientists at Penn State University have found that for runners who ace[...] the 100-yard dash, the thrill[through] of victory may spring from the D[/] ankles and[on] the feet.

When the starting pistol[pisle] fires, sprinters launch into the race with a burst of acceleration. That initial[then vacile] velocity depends, in part, on the length of their toes. The scientists examined the feet of a dozen collegiate[adj.  学院的] sprinters and a dozen non-athletes of a similar height. They measured foot length and used ultrasound imaging to watch Achilles tendons in action. And they found two things.
First, the sprinters have longer toes. That could give them an advantage by allowing them to maintain maximum contact with the ground as they push off the starting block. Second, their Achilles tendons[n.  腱炎, (医学用语) 肌腱发炎, 肌肉和骨头联结处的组织发炎 (也拼作 tendinitis)] have less leverage[n.  杠杆作用, 杠杆率, 杠杆装置]. That might sound bad, but it actually allows their leg muscles[musle] to produce greater force. So next time you see someone like Olympic champion Usain Bolt whip[wip] through a 100-meter sprint in less than 10 seconds, remember: his toes are a big part of such an amazing feat.

恩 这篇也是好多细节 不容易听出来

How can you tell the differences between a French baby and a German baby? No, it's not that one is wearing a saucy little beret(bray) while the other is tucked(talked) into a tiny pair of lederhosen(lady xxx). Well, maybe that's a part of it. But a new study in the journal Current(Core) Biology shows that the babies actually sounds different. Because the melody of an infant’s cry matches its mother tongue(tone).

We all know that the babies start eavesdropping(eve stroping) when they're still in the womb(woom). So when they come out they know their mother’s(mothers') voice. When they're older, they start imitate the sounds they hear. Eventually(Advancely) they babble, and then start to speak, and then you never hear the end of it. But long before that first burble or coo, babies are learning the elements of language.

A team of scientists recorded the cries of sixty newborns(new borns): thirty born into the French-speaking families and thirty that heard German. And they found French infants wail (at)on [wail on:连读] a rising note while the Germans favor a falling melody. Those patterns matched the rhythms(reason) of their native languages. So next time you hear a baby cry, listen closely. He could be telling you where he's from.

a saucy little beret: 一顶恶心的小贝雷帽- -|||||beret: n.贝雷帽)

womb: n. 子宫
babble, burble or coo: 含糊不清地说话;依依呀呀学语;鸽子咕咕,温柔可爱地说话
wail on a rising tone: vi. 痛哭,哭叫

Talk about the material sacrifice. And(In a) rather freakish twist of nature, baby spiders and some species completely devour their moms. And now researchers have discovered that the practice can get even stranger. Scientists from XXX(Israel’s Ben Gurion) University wanted to know (if) spiders participating(participate in) a cooperative (group) mothering, (as) some mammals and birds too(do). They investigated a species of spiders from southern Africa known as(for) terminal(maternal, 母方的) care and communal(公共的) living. The results appear in the general behavior and social biology(journal Behavioral Ecology and Sociobiology).

In some experimental nests, researchers let a group of females be attacked(intact, adj 完整的;未动过的=unimpaired;保持处女的;未经阉割的) but removed axes(egg sacks, 麻袋) from all one of the mothers to be. In control groups, there was only one female on(and) her eggs. At the end of the study, they checked the health of the spider babies. In those groups with multiple moms, more eggs successfully hatched and grows(brood,一窝的XX,这里指一窝小蜘蛛was) healthier overall. As for the moms, (?) they were almost all sucked dry, leaving only their crysty(crispy 脆的) skeletons. So now this(at least) one species of spiders is known to participate (communal) mothering. And under the right circumstances, even the XXX(surrogate, 替代的) mom sacrifices everything for the offspring.
