217.The following appeared in a brochure promoting the purchase of local franchisesfor a national chain of gyms.

"Nowis the time to invest in a franchise so that you can profit from opening one ofour gyms in your town. Consider the current trends: Power-Lift Gyms are alreadypopular among customers in 500 locations, and national surveys indicateincreasing concern with weight loss and physical fitness. Furthermore, lastyear's sales of books and magazines on personal health totaled more than $50million, and purchases of home exercise equipment almost doubled. Investing nowin a Power-Lift Gym franchise will guarantee a quick profit."

Inthis argument, the author claims that invest in Power-Lift Gyms can make investorprofitable. To support this claim the author provide that the current trendsshow Power-Lift Gyms are so popular in 500 locations. At the same time, theauthor cites the result from national surveys as the basis to provide thatweight loss and physical fitness concerning is increasing. Furthermore, the authorprovides that books and magazines on personal health totally sold more than $50million last year and purchases of home exercise equipment almost doubled. Itseems that all those evidences can support the claim strongly and powerfully, however, after careful examination of those evidences, reveals that it lendslittle credible and convincing.

Firstof all, the author claims that invest Power-Lift Gym is a profitable deal, butthe author fails to inform how profitability of former Power-Lift Gyms. EvenPower-Lift Gyms are popular among customers in 500 locations, maybe thePower-Lift Gym itself make itself with low-margin or no-margin just intendedsolely to build market share. With this factor, investing Power-Lift Gym couldnot ensure investor benefit. Besides, we do not know the cost of a Power-Lift Gym,and the detailed process of installation and management of the gym, thus aquick profit cannot be guaranteed. In this matter, without any detailinformation about the cost, the profit and etc make the author’s claimunbelievable and incredible, and hardly persuade people to invest it.

Secondly, the author cites national surveys and trend to support the claim, but theauthor fails to consider the difference between every specific region and thosesurveys’ result could hardly indicate that people would be interested inPower-Lift Gym because they are concerned about weight loss and physicalfitness. Maybe Power-lift Gyms are really popular among customers in 500locations, but we don’t know any information about how popular the Power-LiftGym is in each region. Perhaps this conclusion just depended on average data ofthose 500 locations, so that the national trend has little strength and powerto make the claim creditable. Furthermore, the author provides that people areinterested in weight loss and physical fitness nationwide, but it could notprovide people would be concerned about Power-Lift Gym. Perhaps, they just likedoing sports and learning how to make themselves fitness and health, so thatthey purchase the home exercise equipment and make the total of this equipmentalmost double and buy lots of books and magazines of health and made them salestotally 50$ million last year as the author provides. Therefore, this evidencecan make the claim groundless and baseless.

Tosum up, the claim lack credibility because those evidences cited in theanalysis does not lend strong support to what the author claims. To strengthenthe argument, the author should provide more information about Power-Lift Gymprofitable ability and the data of different regions’ resident’s demand of it.

Issue 7
The video camera provides such an accurate and convincing record of contemporary life that it has become a more important form of documentation written records.
1. Everything has two sides. With technology developing, we can record our life in more and convenient ways. Using video camera or written in notepad is one of our main way to record our life. Although I agree that video camera can record of life vividly and conveniently as the author said, but real life not just pictures and videos.
2. In general speaking, both two ways has its advantages, like video camera can help people record conveniently and rapidly, in other hand, record written in notebook can show people's emotion and spirit. We couldn't regard which is best?
3. Otherwise, people need record life in multi-type ways because life is not whole of objective facts. Life would be suffered by people's emotion, feeling and so on, and the important thing is, it makes our life become colorful and wonderful. Video camera and written like diary just record life in different vision.
4. At the same time, different people cognize the record of life is not similarly. Digital pictures can be easily understand by people, in another way, with low cost, written used for easy record, transmission, share and so on.
5. In sum...
With the technology and science rapidly and quickly developing, world have changed and made our life become more conveniently than before. When people live in this world, there are many beautiful and happy memories, good or bad things, important logs and etc they want to record. And nowadays, we can use many tools to record our life, like digital camera and documentation, can we only use one tools to record our life at every point? Admittedly, to some extent, maybe some tools would help us to record our life easily, clearly and accurate, like using video camera. However, human’s life not only consists of material life but also spiritual life, people’s records also depend on their two kind of life, in this matter, spiritual memories couldn’t records by pictures and videos and, the most important is, we should write them into notebook by our heart.

In general speaking, every recording methods has its own advantages, like video camera can help people record conveniently, rapidly and vividly, in other hand, recording in documentations can indicative that people's different emotions and spirit. We couldn't regard which is best. For example, if we travel to some place, we often use video camera to take photos, one reason is that video cameras can accurate record where we have been and what we have done, and when we look back these photos, we can easily remember those travels and those wonderful memories vividly and brightly. On the contrary, video camera can’t record human’s internal acts and emotions. As we know, in law-enforcing departments, when someone crimes and is arrested, firstly, the police will take three pictures for them, and then, when the police recorded statements, they write it on documents. Why did they do so? Why they didn’t use video camera continually? Because, writing in documents can accurate record the offender’s motives and mental processes. In short, different recording method has its own advantages in different ways, every methods is important way for us to record something.

Otherwise, people need record life in multi-type ways because life is not whole of objective facts. Life would be suffered by people's emotion, feeling and so on, and the important thing is, it makes our life become colorful and wonderful. Video camera and written like diary just record life in different vision. Let’s look back the travel example I mentions before. Just imagine that if we go to travel and only use video camera to record, when we want to remember this travel what should we forget? Perhaps, we will forget excitement when we arrived in a new location. Perhaps, we will forget feelings when we saw beautiful and spectacularly scenery. If we record our travel in notebook and etc, maybe we could remember our feelings in the travel. And if we only use written method to record this travel, when we try to remember this travel what would happen? Yes, we could remember the excited mood when we arrived in a new location but we couldn’t remember the location looks like. We could remember the shock when we saw beautiful and grandly scenery but maybe we couldn’t remember how this scenery beautiful and grandly. In shortly, different recording method just record our life in different aspects, humans couldn’t use only one method to record all.

In sum, with technology and science developing, in the future, humans will have more and more methods to record easily, rapidly and conveniently. Different methods have their own advantages in their ways, because human beings have multi-types of life, cultures, regions, religious convictions and etc, we need multi-types methods and should use these multi-types of methods to recording.

Issue 69
"Government should place few, if any, restrictions on scientific research and development"

With the technology and science rapidly andquickly developing, world have changed and made our life become more and moreconveniently than before. Nowadays, no matter when, no matter where you are, nomatter what you want to do, you would benefited more or less form thetechnology. When we enjoy the new era and the convenient technology, someonethink that government place too much restrictions on the scientific research, theysuspect that we should lay it fewer and fewer, shall we? Admittedly, to someextent, maybe the scientific research will also bring us some problems likeGlobal Warming, Nuclear Pollution and etc; however, problems are based on thoseachievements which we should use in right ways, not the processing of thedevelopment itself.

In general speaking, politicians are differentfrom scientists, the government also unfamiliar with the science, if the governmentplaces more restrictions on the scientific research, those would enable thenormal track of the scientific research blocked and eventually impede thedevelopment of science. As we know, governments often distribute social resourcefor researches just depending on their own benefits, like governments alwaysadvocated some researches which can bring common interests for them and ignoredsome fundamental or academic research at the same time. In this matter, itwould influence and break the balance of the development of science. If thisbasic research was growing behind other researches in progressing, it wouldcause that every research would develop sluggishly in all the relate area. Forexample, in period of Soviet Union, the government needs more and more advancedmilitary technology to help them against the USA in the Cold War after WWI. Sothat, Soviet Union government restricted and ignored the civil scientific research, then the government use those additional societal resources make lots of facilities, material things to support the military technology research. When the SovietUnion disintegrated, people find out that without top military technology theyhave nothing, so that the Russia was quickly and speedy deep in economicdepression in the 90s. In short, if governments want to restrict and controlthe process of the scientific research, it would break the balance oftechnology development and make some badly influences for the world.

Secondly, development of science andtechnology brings humans, societies, countries and the worlds more and morebenefits and interests, and make our life colorful and beautiful. No matter whomyou are, no matter where you are, no matter what you want, you are enjoying thebenefits every time from the new scientific. For example, nowadays we use theInternet to communicate with others, to buy something we want, to makeourselves happy, to get the newest information and etc, it changed the world,it makes our life styles have been changed, and it promotes human beings. Onthe other hand, with the developing of the medical technology, people healthhave been improved, think about if our medical technology was not developed, what will happen? Maybe, the Black Death will be erupted again; maybe peoplewill be easily killed by tuberculosis if we didn’t find the Penicillin; maybeevery lying-in woman has high possibilities to dead when she was giving thebirth to her baby. In short, if governments want to restrict and control theprocess of the scientific research, it would break the balance of technologydevelopment and make some badly influences for the world.

But, in some area, technology and sciencebrings us not only benefits but also problems. We have to face to the GlobalWarming Problem because we use oil excessively; we have to worry about theNuclear Pollution because we have Nuclear Bombs and Nuclear Power Stations;also we have to debate whether the Clone Man is against traditional morals ornot. We have to face much more problems we never before. However, those problemsare caused by ourselves, we couldn’t define whether the science and technologyitself is correct or not, errors are base on how we use this result from scientificresearches. Thus, the government should place restrictions on the way peopleuse the science, not restrict the development of science itself.

In sum, scientific research will let uslive better and better, for this reason, governments should place fewrestrictions on the processing of scientific research, on the other hand, governments also should direct humans how to use those researches’ result andplace restrictions on the way which we used.

76. The following appeared as part of an article in a health and beauty magazine.

"A group of volunteers participated in a study of consumer responses to the new Luxess face cream. Every morning for a month, they washed their faces with mild soap and then applied Luxess. At the end of that month, most volunteers reported a marked improvement in the way their skin looked and felt. Thus it appears that Luxess is truly effective in improving the condition of facial skin."

In this argument, the author claims that Luxess can improve the customer’s condition of facial skin effectively and efficiently. To support this claim the author cites the result form a study of consumer responses to the new Luxess face cream as the basis to provide that after washing faces with mild soap and applying Luxess, most volunteers said that they felt their skin was improved. It seems that all those evidences can support the claim strongly and powerfully, however, after careful examination of those evidences, reveals that it lends little credible and convincing.

First of all, the author provides that those volunteers felt their skin was improved because their washed face with mild soap and the Luxess, however, the author fails to rule out the possibility that it is the mild soap that actually improved the condition of the volunteer’s facial skin. It is highly possible the mild soap cause the effectiveness s that the volunteers’ skin was improved. Maybe only use Luxess couldn’t improve the condition of the human’s facial skin, but when people use mild soap first, it would promote the Luxess’ efficiency so that it makes most volunteers reported a marked improvement in the way their skin looked and felt. Without contrasting group only washed face with Luxess or mild soap to show us that the effectiveness from other factors, we couldn’t assert whether Luxess is truly effective in improving the condition of facial skin or not, in this matter, it makes the claim become incredibility and groundless.

Secondly, the author provides that after this study, most volunteers reported a marked improvement in the way their skin looked and felt, but it is high doubt that those volunteers may have misunderstanding about the condition of their facial skin. After careful examination of this evidence, reveals that the author did not provide any detailed information about the condition of the volunteer’s facial skin. We don’t know how the volunteers felt about their facial skin before the study; and after this study why they felt their skin was improved. Maybe the volunteers reported a marked improvement in the way their skin looked and felt just depend on the mental because they thought that they use the Luxess and the mild soap. According to this factor, the conclusion that Luxess is truly effective in improving the condition of facial skin, become not objective or easily verified by detailed data. On another hand, even if those reports are objectively and credibility, however, could those volunteers be representative of all consumers using Luxess? Without any detailed information about this study and the volunteers’ physical and psychic status, we couldn’t assert this study is verified and representative.
To sum up, the claim lack credibility because those evidences cited in the analysis does not lend strong support to what the author claims. To strengthen the conclusion, the author should provide more information about these volunteers and the study.

51. The following appeared in a medical newsletter.

"Doctors have long suspected that secondary infections may keep some patients from healing quickly after severe muscle strain. This hypothesis has now been proved by preliminary results of a study of two groups of patients. The first group of patients, all being treated for muscle injuries by Dr. Newland, a doctor who specializes in sports medicine, took antibiotics regularly throughout their treatment. Their recuperation time was, on average, 40 percent quicker than typically expected. Patients in the second group, all being treated by Dr. Alton, a general physician, were given sugar pills, although the patients believed they were taking antibiotics. Their average recuperation time was not significantly reduced. Therefore, all patients who are diagnosed with muscle strain would be well advised to take antibiotics as part of their treatment."

In this argument, the author recommends all patients who are diagnosed with muscle strain, would be better if they took antibiotics as part of their treatment. To support the author’s recommendation the author cites results as basis form a study of two groups of patients, one took antibiotics regularly throughout their treatment, another didn’t, as the basis to provide that took antibiotics would make recuperation time become quicker than typically expected. It seems that this study can support the hypothesis strongly and powerfully, however, after careful examination of those evidences, reveals that it lends little credible and convincing.

In general speaking, the author didn’t provide detailed information of this study, we couldn’t assert the conclusion just depending on one group use antibiotics and another didn’t. In commonsense, we know that different physical conditions and the severity of injuries would influence the recuperation. Maybe the first group’s recuperation time was 40 percent quicker than typically expected on average, but it highly possible that patients who are in first group were more strong or better body quality than who are in second group. In this matter, the patients in first group would surely decrease recuperation time, it was not because the antibiotics effect, so that it makes the study become groundless. In another hand, even if those patients are almost similarity in physical conditions and quality, but there must be other different between two groups. As the author provides, the first group was treated by Dr. Newland, a doctor who specializes in sports medicine, and the second group just by Dr. Alton, a general physician. Maybe they two treat those patients in different ways, not only one use antibiotics another not, but also different methods. In this factor, we could not conclude that the study would credibility and convincing.

Moreover, not all patients who are diagnosed with muscle strain will suffer from secondary infections and even if they suffered from secondary infections, maybe they are not suitable to taking antibiotics. In this argument, the author didn’t provide what are the chances of patients with muscle strain suffering from secondary infections. Maybe most of these types of patients would not be suffered. So that this study wouldn’t represent to most patients conditions and make these conclusions incredibility. Also, may be most of patients would suffered from the secondary infections, but it highly possible that lots of these patients would not suitable to taking antibiotics. Maybe, they have allergy reaction to antibiotics, and in this matter, the result from the first group would become none representative to most patients. In shortly, without information of the chances which patients would secondary infections and the proportions of patients have allergy reaction, this conclusion was groundless and unfounded.

To sum up, the conclusion lack credibility because this study cited in the analysis does not lent strong support to what the author want to proof. To strengthen the conclusion, the author should provide more information about the patients in this study and the antibiotics.

213. The following appeared in a memorandum from the owner of Armchair Video, a chain of video rental stores

"Because of declining profits, we must reduce operating expenses at Armchair Video's ten video rental stores. Raising prices is not a good option, since we are famous for our special bargains. Instead, we should reduce our operating hours. Last month our store in downtown Marston reduced its hours by closing at 6:00 P.M. rather than 9:00 P.M. and reduced its overall inventory by no longer stocking any film released more than two years ago. Since we have received very few customer complaints about these new policies, we should now adopt them at all other Armchair Video stores as our best strategies for improving profits."

In this argument, the author claims that Armchair Video’s ten video rental stores should decrease their operating expenses because of declining profits. To support his recommendation, the author provides that Armchair Video is famous for their special bargains so that they couldn’t increase their profits by raise the prices. Then, the author cites the result from one store in downtown Marston reduced operating time and stocked film as the basis to support his recommendation. It seems that all those evidences can support the claim strongly and powerfully, however, after careful examination of those evidences, reveals that it lends little credible and convincing.

To begin with, the author fails to sufficiently illustrate that why raising prices would not be a good solution for improving profits. The author didn’t provide any information about the proportions of the special bargains. And, the author didn’t provide whether the customers would accept the increased price or not. Without those evidences, the author assert that AV couldn’t raise the price is groundless and unconvincing.

Secondly, the author fails to consider that few customer complaints were received does not indicate that most customers are satisfied with these policies. Maybe most customers was unsatisfied with the new policies, they would use another Video rental store’s service and not give any complaints to AV stores. Even if it is true that very few customer complaints about these new policies in the one month. In this sight, the situation of this month might not be representative of that of the whole year, or the negative effects might not have emerged yet. Maybe with the policies are applied after long times, more and more customer complaints this new policies and chooser another Video rental store services. In short, we could not assume customers are satisfied just based on one month commissioning with new policies in one store.

Thirdly, the author didn’t consider that the success of the new policies at one store does not ensure that adopting them would necessarily be successful at all other Armchair stores. Maybe in other areas, people like older films more than recent films. Or perhaps, the customers in other areas are knocking off at 6:00 P.M., so that if AV store closed in 6:00 P.M., It will decrease the revenue and the profits. Even if new policies would successful at all other A stores, the author didn’t provide any detailed information about after new policies applied, whether the profits was increased of not. Thus, we cannot evaluate that we should adopt new policies at all other stores.

In sum, the claim lack credibility because those evidences cited in the analysis does not lend strong support to what the author recommends. To strengthen the argument, the author should provide more information about the new policies applied in M store and survey whether the customer would accept the increased price or not.

88 "Technologies not only influence but actually determine social customs and ethics."

With the technology and science rapidly and enormously developing, world has been changed and made our life become more and more conveniently than before. We also witness the transformation in custom of community and the ethics of epoch dissimilated from the past. Is that difference was caused just by technologies? Admittedly, to some extent, maybe yes, however, development of technology not only influence and determine the social custom and ethics but also be affected and decided by them both.

To begin with, the development of technology brings us great benefits and cause large changes to our traditional custom at the same time. Thank to the Information Revolution and the Third Industrial Revolution, we can easily access the Internet and communicate with others, buy goods, play games. What’s more we can fly in the sky, cross the continent, dive into the deep sea. Besides, we can delegate high risk works to auto machines, working remotely by computers, explore secret world with precise instruments. If the Information Revolution and the Third Industrial Revolution didn’t take place, what will happen? Maybe we weren’t paying more attention to the time of sharing with family because we should spend more time on working. Maybe we couldn’t leave our hometown too far to recognize the world because we have no powerful transportation to use. Maybe we have to do every risky mission because nothing can replace ourselves. In short, our lifestyle, ideas and knowledge are different from the past depend on the development of the technology.

Secondly, our social ethics was being influenced by technologies more or less. As we know, ethics is the criterion of individual’s behavior, which is a production of long process through thousands of years influenced by the morality, history, and environment. With the changing of the society, it would influence the human’s behavior and actually change the social ethics. For example, in ancient times, human was restricted by sexual discrimination, natural marriage, blood contract and so on; those moral restrictions made humans have no freedom. When people who lived in that period of times, those restrictions made against their willing like get married or choose girl friends. But nowadays, with conception of sexual equal spreading to the world through the Internet and etc, we find out that those restrictions were fading out and disappearing. What’s more, in the Middle Age, people didn’t have enough knowledge about human’s body; they thought it was made by the God and dissecting human’s remains were forbidden by the government. But nowadays, with the medicinal technology developing, remains donation is regard as the embodiment of admirable and respectable. In short, technologies would change the individual’s life and then affect the social ethics.

Furthermore, the development of technology was also influenced and determined by social ethics. For example, when the clone technology has been appeared in the world, the controversy of clone technology was never stopping. In one hand, people need this technology to help solving the incurable disease and on another hand, people also afraid it will break the traditional ethical principles. So that the government restricts the way we use the clone technology by social ethics. Another controversial question which people debate around the world is that should we recognize euthanasia as legal? Some people thought that humans can keep alive with incurable disease in modern medical technology, but others claims that we should let those people die nicely. Thus, to a great extent, social customs and ethics have a hold on the development of technology.

In sum, the technologies and the social custom and ethics would influence and determine each other. We should find a balance way between development of technology and the custom and ethics. In that matter, we could avoid many social problems and enjoy the technology at the same time.

160"The most essential quality of an effective leader is the ability to remain consistently committed to particular principles and objectives. Any leader who is quickly and easily influenced by shifts in popular opinion will accomplish little."

Due to explosive development of science and technology, so much is new and complex. When the productivity has been promoted nowadays, people began to discuss the most essential quality which an effective leader should have. Some of them thought that the effective leader should have ability to remain consistently committed to particular principles and objectives. Admittedly, to some degree, maybe yes, an effective leader should keep his ideas and execute the roadmap firmly. However, in my view point, effective leaders in different area should be dissimilarity, and sometimes, accept another opinion will help leader become more efficient.

To begin with, in some territory, leader should think about problems in overall way, so that they have to remain consistently committed to particular principles and objectives indeed. We know that some leader’s major task is to establish a framework o the roadmap. For example, Steven Jobs, the founder and CEO of Apple Inc, was famous in Silicon Valley not only because he created the Apple Empire but also his monomania. When Apple Inc at the lowest moment, he returned, and in the next years, no matter how the popular opinion of MP3 player’s market change, no matter how many people suspect his plan, he was execute his plan unmistakably. At the end, the Apple Inc launches the IPOD Mp3 Player in October 23, 2001 and it save the Apple Inc. If Steve Jobs didn’t insist his plan, what will happen? Maybe we couldn’t experience such Mp3 Player which combined the art with the popular technology. Maybe we couldn’t buy such Notebook which can be packed by an envelope. In short, sometimes, the leader should remain their opinions and in that ways it maybe brings success.

Secondly, sometimes, leader also should consider different ideas from population’s opinion and development of social. Like in business world, leader should change the roadmap or plan by the information from the demand. If leader couldn’t make new plan to adapt the market in time, maybe it will cause losses and make the company failed. For example, in the 1990s, there was a famous company named 3Dfx, the biggest Graphic Company in the world, manufacturing a product named Voodoo Graphics chip which is the most famous Graphic chip around the world. Their Voodoo Graphics PCI Card was spreading almost the whole world. In that time, every computer fans has a dream is that owing a Voodoo Card no matter how much they have to spend. In the middle of 1990s, because the 3Dfx leader didn’t consider that game developers want Voodoo Card publish its API documents, the 3Dfx became going downhill. At end, a company named nVidia, another Graphic Card Company, brought 3Dfx, and terminated the 3Dfx Empire. From this case, we know that sometimes, as a leader, you should consider more other ideas.

Thus, an effective leader should have an ability not only remains consistently committed to particular principles and objectives but also adopts the dissimilar views from other realm. In this way, it can make the company keep developing. For example, Bill Gates, the legend of the Silicon Valley, chair-man of the Microsoft Company which is the biggest software company in the world. I remember a magazine once ask Bill Gates why he can keep his business growing healthily, Bill said that: he always went among the employees and listened to them and asked for their ideas. In short, without any opinions from another point, the leader would not make the right choice.

Finally, even if an ability of remains consistently committed to particular principles is very important to an effective leader, but the leader also should adopt another different view. Also as a leader, you need ability like deal with employee’s relationship and so on.
