Theauthor asserts that scandals in many areas are useful for the sake ofattentions drawn on problems in ways that no speaker or reformer evercould. Although I concede that scandals can reveal some hidden truth insome way, under lots of conditions, it can lead to misunderstanding, and may also attend to the superficial and neglect the essentials.
Admittedly, scandals exposed to thepublic can be useful in focusing our attention in the way of scathingthe image of the involved. Take the phenomenon of corruption among theofficials for example, only when the act of accepting bribe came to thelight can the other officials be alarmed, cautioning their ownbehaviors. Besides, to accuse the corrupt officials, laws are modifiedand maybe more are enacted, reducing the rate of such crimes. Throughthis way, more and more people become aware of the severity andpunishment of corruption, and learn not to give or accept bribes, andappropriate public funds. It is the same with scholars. Plagiarism andshenanigan have even slipped into every corner of the world. From HwangWoo-Suk, making a false claim that he had cloned human embryonic stemcells to university students, cobbling graduation essay, again andagain we are surprised at the population involved and fame of theprivy. Obviously, if the scandals are not uncovered, the speaker cannot speak aloud on the harm and severity of corruption and plagiarism;neither can the reformer carry out new policies without the support ofthe mass.
Nevertheless, as scandals can draw ourattentions to the unnoticing facts about an individual, they may alsoexaggerate the faults 【with little mentioning of the】without mentioning the contributions hemade. [At the mention]In the scandal of President Clinton, what comes to you firstmay be the Lewinsky scandal, rather than what he had contributed to thecountry especially the economic prosperity during his term. Thisscandal just casted a lasting shadow on the president, causing animpeachment which almost ends his political career. .
What’s more, it can even mislead us to believing blindly intentional and malicious gossips.
The “king of pop” Michael Jackson once involved in scandals of his skin bleaching and was accused of child sexual abuse in 1993,which had a huge negative impact on his performing career. But, toeveryone’s surprise, the truth is that he made up the skin to disguisehis illness of Vitiligo, and he is absolutely innocent in the case. What is a pity, he never recovered from the humiliation. People alwaysfocus on the negative news about him, neglecting his devotion oncommonweal. In fact, he donated and raised millions of dollars forbeneficial causes through his Heal the World Foundation, charity singles, and support of 39 charities. The scandals generated significantcontroversy that damaged his public image, which proves that it isunreasonable to claim scandals are useful.
In addition, while scandals can draw ourattentions in special ways, the exposure of the hidden truth is notnecessarily done by them. In some cases, it is the unwillingness of thespeakers and reformers that prevent them from revealing the truthbecause they have to take responsibilities for their words andbehaviors. Chances are that the pressure from the high officials andthe mass media block the way of revealing the vital problems. Theycould do that, but are not willing to.这段论证有点弱了,如果有例子就更好哦。
In conclusion, scandals are useful inreflecting the dark societal phenomenon while speakers and reformersare weak in disclosing some sensitive issues, but can also lead tounexpectedly serious influences on the persons involved and drawpeople’s attention to a one-sided even incorrect understanding of them.
