The author asserts that scandals in many areas are useful for the sake of attentions drawn on problems in ways that no speaker or reformer ever could. Although I concede that scandals can reveal some hidden truth in some way, under lots of conditions, it can lead to misunderstanding, and may also attend to the superficial and neglect the essentials.

Admittedly, scandals exposed to the public can be useful in focusing our attention in the way of scathing the image of the involved. Take the phenomenon of corruption among the officials for example, only when the act of accepting bribe came to the light can the other officials be alarmed, cautioning their own behaviors. Besides, to accuse the corrupt officials, laws are modified and maybe more are enacted, reducing the rate of such crimes. Through this way, more and more people become aware of the severity and punishment of corruption, and learn not to give or accept bribes, and appropriate public funds. It is the same with scholars. Plagiarism and shenanigan have even slipped into every corner of the world. From Hwang Woo-Suk, making a false claim that he had cloned human embryonic stem cells to university students, cobbling graduation essay, again and again we are surprised at the population involved and fame of the privy. Obviously, if the scandals are not uncovered, the speaker can not speak aloud on the harm and severity of corruption and plagiarism; neither can the reformer carry out new policies without the support of the mass.

Nevertheless, as scandals can draw our attentions to the unnoticing facts about an individual, they may also exaggerate the faults with little mentioning of the contributions he made. At the mention of President Clinton, what comes to you first maybe the Lewinsky scandal, rather than what he had contributed to the country especially the economic prosperity during his term. This scandal just cast a lasting shadow on the president, causing an impeachment which almost ends his political career. .

What’s more, it can even mislead us to believe blindly intentional and malicious gossips.
The “king of pop” Michael Jackson once involved in scandals of his skin bleaching and was accused of child sexual abuse in 1993, which had a huge negative impact on his performing career. But, to everyone’s surprise, the truth is that he made up the skin to disguise his illness of Vitiligo, and he is absolutely innocent in the case. What is a pity, he never recovered from the humiliation. People always focus on the negative news about him, neglecting his devotion on commonweal. In fact, he donated and raised millions of dollars for beneficial causes through his Heal the World Foundation, charity singles, and support of 39 charities. The scandals generated significant controversy that damaged his public image, which proves that it is unreasonable to claim scandals are useful.

In addition, while scandals can draw our attentions in special ways, the exposure of the hidden truth is not necessarily done by them. In some cases, it is the unwillingness of the speakers and reformers that prevent them from revealing the truth because they have to take responsibilities for their words and behaviors. Chances are that the pressure from the high officials and the mass media block the way of revealing the vital problems. They could do that, but are not willing to.

In conclusion, scandals are useful in reflecting the dark societal phenomenon while speakers and reformers are weak in disclosing some sensitive issues, but can also lead to unexpectedly serious influences on the persons involved and draw people’s attention to a one-sided even incorrect understanding of them.
