issue 59, 本来是限时的,后来无情地超了两倍时间:L
Ever since ancient time, human being never stop the process of exploration of this world and achieve a tremendous advance. what make us so different from other creatures. The answer lies in independent thinking with which every generation in history has created their own knowledge and insure that human being keep moving. Meanwhile, history also told us learning is not amout to thinking and acting by their own. There is no emulating without imitating. In fact, the progress of human society is based on the balance of these two competing views.
Firstly, thinking and acting independently is a core value of human society and has been the foundation of human progress. Independence means initiative which leads people to extend the boundary of prior knowledge. Aristotle, one of the most important philosophers in human history, once said" Plato is dear to me, but dearer still is truth". Aristotle explored universe in particular things, while his teacher, Plato, maintained that particular things are just shadow of their prototypes which he called idea. As it turn out, Aristotelianism has a profoud influence not only in the Middle Ages or Renaissance but also in modern society and his empiricism provided endless power for science. Examples like that is are numerous more than we can imagine.Nietszche, the father of postmodernism, cannot put up with too much on role models and he's unique philosophy has more profound impact than any other thinkers before him in our time. His independent thinking such as "God is dead", Dionysian spirit which means stormy, ebriety and free are shaking the world and unshackling people from dogmatism. Although his theory may not true, he provided a new insightful and helpful perspective to explain this world after all. Thus, innitiative is so siginificant that drive human being to learn and to create.
However, necessary copy is also needed. We human being live in our empirical world and our knowledge are a continuous and consistent system. Aristole cannot construct a modern physical system. Without so many philosophers' work, Nietzsche cannot criticize logic, religion and metaphysics. So we have to imitate prior knowledge and that is first step for us to create. Gorge Soros, a famous American stock investor, bussinessman, and philanthropist, used to learn with Popper, a important British philosopher. Soros learn a lot from Popper, especially from Popper's famous book, The Open Society and Its Enemies. That is why Soros became a philanthropist that practice the idea of the open society which is democratic and free. He applied Popper's philosophy to ecomoy area and developed his own ecnomic method to invest. As we know, his theory is quite familiar with Popper's, for example, he maintains that anything may in fact be wrong so that we cannot only believe the capability of market of self-repair which is totally stems from Popper's open society. Provided that Soros never learn any basic philosophical idea from Popper, how can he create his own theory so that he may just became a ordinary economist or worse. That is to say, imitate is first we should do to insure we have knowledge fund to create.
To sum up, while this statement is of great insight, it goes from one extremity to the other. We surely need to think and act independently, yet, before we take another step to create, first we need to imitate and to learn prior knowledge. Otherwise we will be involved in the dilemma of water without a source,
and a tree without roots.
